    I sound like a hoon

with just over 20,000 on the clock since 26 March - a long trip to Tassie and another to Queensland - the original tyres are about 70% worn. Now, if the surface is a little smooth and I turn the car, even at a slow speed, the tyres howl - I sound like a hoon!

I've been checking pressures and keeping them at the LR listed, and even done a couple of rotations and balances (well, the local tyre place has).

Coming back from Qld and stopping for dinner in Narabri, we saw a subway and had to turn around to get there - a little slow to decide it would do - and there was a shiny super smooth bitumen round about. Went around at about 5kph, and it was rediculously noisy.

I think I'll probably get to 35,000 on these tyres but will probably NOT put the wrangler HP's on.

Now to a question, what's the noise been like for those that have tried another brand of tyre?

Projected life on my GG AT2s is 73,000 to 1.6mm.

Some surfaces squeal on any type of tyre.

LR listed pressures are too low IMHO. I run 38-40 all the way around and the tyre is wearing nice and evenly all the way over. However my car has mods which increase weight, so for a stock vehicle I'd go for 36-38.

Standard 265/60 - 18's on the thing. I'll stick with the size and guess I'll have to put Pirelli or General AT's or Continental's on it. I'm interested in the noise factor. The HP's are a little noisy in my opinion, and have always had a drumming sound in the cabin like an out of balance tyre, or an open window.

    Discomania,

I have posted a few times about Continental Cross Contact AT's on standrad 18's on my TDV6 SE.

Tyre noise is not a problem as far as Ii am concerned. They are definitely louder than the original Continental UHP that came with it but that is only a problem if you drive with the window down all the time. In city commuting there is no great intrusion and at highway speed I find the wind noise is too great in my D3 (I have roof racks on 100% of the time) to travel with the windows down.

With them up there is a small increase in tyre noise but not enough to be annoying.

I have them inflated to between 38 -40 psi and on road they have been good, and off road so far they have been great. Certainly worth a look.

Not sure about life span but not showing any signed of wear after about 5,000 km and they have a very deep tread so should perform well.

    Hope this helps.

    George

My GG AT2s are approaching 60 odd thousand kms and they squeal something shocking in round-abouts. Mind you I tend to take round-abouts at a decent pace.

I think if you were a piece of rubber charged with pulling 2+ tonnes around a corner you'd scream too!

I guess it's a stupid question in a way - but then again given the mileage some have mentioned, and just how much empirical data some have acquired, there was a distinct possibility that somebody has a db meter, and would measure the tyre noise at various speeds/mileage and compare them.

It's a ver subjective thing. What noise I find excessive or annoying, others will not. It's just that the HP's on the car used to be silent going around the corner to home at 10kph, and now they squeal loudly. Even with 5kph on the digital device they squeal a little.

Most of the noise is down to how the tyres have worn. The tread blocks on the edges of the tyres have NOT worn down evenly. The front edge of the block is higher than the rear edge, hence the noise they make.

It's the same effect as you get on motorcycles, only the effect is not noise that I can hear (my bike is a touch too loud for that), but is felt as an oscilation in the front/rear of the bike.

I've been told the effect is due to inflation issues, both over and under, but even with usind the pressure the manufacturer says is perfect, and checking daily, it still happens with some tyres.

    It's yet another interesting phenomenon.
