    Design fault or marketing ploy???

Got back from a 6week trip through the north west of WA yesterday. When washing the D4 today (pindan is a bugger to remove) I noticed that on both the rear rims there was a gouge around the inside of both rims. I can only determine that a stone got jambed between the brake caliper and the rim. Given the tight space it would not have to be a large stone.

Either the designers did not test the vehicles in an environment similar to ours or is a good way to try and sell more rims.

its an oil company lead conspiracy man...

your rim was produced in a factory powered by an oil burning power station. on top of that if the damage gets bad enough and the rim fails you take out the tyre which is a petroleum based product.

on top of all that just to really gouge your wallet while the stones in there eating your rim you burn extra fuel trying to overcome the additional friction.

Design fault and one which is difficult to fix given the fact there are no standards for sizes of stones on roads.

Discoverys are designed by people who never travel remote areas, nor are they designed for those of us that wish to travel remote reliably.
When they think offroad 4X4, they are thinking of a Pheasant hunt down green lanes of England or bonny Scotland where there also flat bed trucks 10 minutes away to come pick you up and take you to the dealer because the park brake sensors detected a shoe out of adjustment and put your car into limp mode and lowered to the stops as happened to me last week in a remote area of WA.
Of course, lets write the software to lower the car and go limp mode because the park brake requires a blow out with air to clear the dust, and all at 110 kms/hr, what a brilliant idea.
Sometimes I wonder how they know which way to put their pants on in the morning.

As we cannot re-write the code (and there's plenty that needs fixing), we have to work out what's necessary to overcome or bypass the inappropriate actions. You can't anticipate the first time the suspension drops suddenly but you can prevent it happening again by removing the main suspension ecu fuse from the engine compartment fuse box once its back up to height.
