    D4 Side Mirrors

Some **** pulled my LHS mirror from parked (fully retracted) to full forward. It took a bit of mucking around to get it back into the normal position.

However, it looks like it's not quite coming back all the way when you lock the car....maybe only a CM or so....but definately not even.

Having never payed close attention before this incident, I'm unsure if this is correct or otherwise. Are the retracted mirrors on a D4 supposed to fold back exactly the same amount? I'm assuming they would. If so, is it fixable?

    Cheers,

    Kev.

    Hi Kev,
There are some arseholes around (woops I swore........sorry). This type of thing really gets up my nose.
Kev, I reckon the uneven thing may be due to the fact that you have the left & right hand mirrors adjusted unevenly in the first place...........if you know what I mean.
When you sit in the vehicle and adjust the mirrors to suit you, they appear uneven from the outside.
    Cheers, Craig

    Hi Craig,

Yes there are....if I caught him in the act....I'd be in trouble....LOL!!!

Don't the outer casing remain in the same spot when in the driving position and it's only the mirror internal that moves? So yes the mirrors would be uneven to match your driving position but I thought the cases would be symetrical when viewed from the front of the car, whether retracted or not....standing aligned with the centre of the grill or bonnet. Does that make sense?

So Craig, when you lock your car and the mirrors have retracted, are the mirror cases slightly mis-aligned (L from right) or do they retract an identical amount on each side?

    Cheers,

    Kev.

Kev, you are right with the interior moving without the exterior.
Just measured mine in a locked position. The drivers side is 12mm closer to the window than the passenger side. Not enough to detect with the naked eye.
Maybe that Ahole did do something to alter the closing position.
    Cheers, Craig

    Thanks for the trouble Craig.

It may be normal to be uneven but these things make you paranoid..."is that how it used to be"......

    Sorry folks, still seeing red......

    Regards,

    Kev.

You have a point, but I doubt they were designed to be pulled from hard against the glass to full forward. I'd say that when in the normal posi they would be supple but a motor has driven them into the parked posi. The case wasn't too keen to go back into the drive position....I tried the normal 'Press both buttons' retract selection, which did nothing and then had to give it a bit of encouragement to even get it back to the normal drive posi.

It then took a few cycles to get it to retract. Probably not what LR had planned.

But you'd be right on the fact that they may not all retract evenly I suppose.

    Cheers,

    Kev.

what happens is if you pull it you will here it click and go all flopy sort of, it has jsut come out of its motor latch, it will just simply latch and click back into its mount, it dosent sound good but every one of them do it,

to be honest i have never meserd how far out they side from the door, just if we had a customer complaint id just test it to a few others and get averige and see how it is, 100% of complaints with the mirrors is when locking/unlock they judder, there is a bulliten out about this and it actually states to put the mirror thru its full movement,

To reset the mirrors, just fold them towards the mirror(inwards) against the glass, have vehicle running & press the fold mirror function (left & right buttons together) on the adjustable mirror switch.
This will run the mirror motors through there full travel of motion & reset the mirrors, you may hear a click/clunk, but it is what it is supposed to do.
All the vehicles do them these days, D2/D3/D4/Spt/Vog/Volvo/Jag etc etc..
As Stig0000 has said they are designed to do this, & yes from glass to fully out. It doesnt sound nice when they do, but it saves you from replacing an expensive component if they break.

    Cheers.

    Mirrors all good now.

LR pulled the cases apart and lubed everything at it's 12 monthly service and it's all working fine now....no squeaks either.

    Cheers,

    Kev.
