    D4 First Service

    Hi All,

D4 3.0l SE has just gone in for it's first major service (12 months). Should I re-mortgage my house?

    Cheers,

    Kev.

    Celtoid,

    Ring around as well.

I phones a couple of dealers/service places and check prices, last service I saved about $150 over my normal dealers quote.

All with another authorised Sydney LR dealer/service centre.

    Thanks George,

Too late for that....It's already in the Valley at Austral. I work in the city, so it's the only convenient spot for me to drop off and pick up. I should plan better next time.

I just rang them and they've quoted $385....I'm assuming before parts and consumables.....

    Cheers,

    Kev.

OK, so gouged $800+ for the service....but the car is driving absolutely brilliantly....it is running so smoothly...even the transmission seems silky smooth. Not sure why this is the case, as the engine oil is the only real change....but whatever they did....it's great.

    Squeaky mirrors are now fixed.

Needs to go back in to get the bushes replaced in the suspension....hopefully fixing the squeaks there too.

And apparently the dash needs to be removed to check/fit some bushings (?) there, that may be creating some wierd noises I've been experiencing off road.

    Other than that....all good!

    Cheers,

    Kev.

They must use really high quality oil and parts, but to be fair most of my "A" services (oil, oil filter changes) have been around $750 mark so sounds about right, but last one was closer to $600 after ringing around.

Convenience is obviously worth something, is it $50, or $150 ?

Some have supplied the dealer with their own oil, filters replacements and other parts, purchase over the net and save good $ as well. I have not done this myself but might consider if I was organised enough.

Another interesting thing about the service I just had carried out....LR called to say that my wheel alignment was out by 6mm.

I told LR that it was hard to believe since I've only recently got the car back from BMW at Daisy Hill (Brisbane) after they fitted 4 new wheels and checked the chassis for trueness, etc, after an accident (RACQ recommended them). LR stated that having independant suspension, the D4 (I'm assuming D3 and RRS too) are prone to pushing out the wheel alignment but not by 6mm in two months, unless I'd hit something. I haven't and the car hasn't even been off road since the wheels were replaced.

Anyway, I front up at LR and they show me the report. They also stated that they find it hard to believe that BMW even had the kit or the knowledge to properly align the D4....something to do with the set-up.

I saw the report so I'm suss about the work that BMW have carried out.

If BMW have pulled a shonky I'm gonna have a word with my insurer.

Anybody able to shed some light.....is the D4 difficult to align...or does it need special equipment that other OEMs are unlikely to have?

    Cheers,

    Kev.

To do it properly it needs to be put in geometry set mode first. (sets the height and limits self leveling) also known as Tight Tolerence Mode. This can be done with IDS (LR equipement) or Autologic.
I am sure BMW would not know this or would have had it done properly. When I got hit in the side I made sure the insurance got the LR dealer to do the alignment.

A mate of mine has just had to take his D3 back to LR for a wheel alignment after so called tyre shop experts said they did it.
