    Raised Air Intake Disco 3

    Hi Guys,
I am looking at a 2.7 D3 to fit out for an extensive round Australia trip. I want to have a snorkel fitted. I have always had the Safari snorkel from ARB on my previous disco's. I see Land Rover have a Raised Air Intake as an option. It has been suggested to me that it is not ideal for serious river crossings as it is not sealed like the Safari Snorkel - Is this correct? If the vehicle I purchase has a factory raised air intake, can it be replaced with a Safari Snorkel or is the access through the front gaurd different thus making it impractical to change?
    Regards

    Be aware of the following:

An acquaintance fitted the Mantec RAI (LR approved part), and found out during his DIY that the snorkel does not seal all the way to the air filter box

He tested it by fitting a rag over the RAI and the engine kept going happily by sucking air through a couple of holes in the ducting. Even LR and Mantec were unaware of this!

    John,

Check this thread as there has been a bit of discussion on this topic over the last little while.

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...ghlight=safari

As I recall, the LR RAI is just that, a raised air intake and not a snorkel so not waterproof, better than nothing however.

The safari is more "water tight" with sealing around the intake and replacement of an OEM LR perforated hose from the air box.

From my read if you plan on attempting any serious water crossing go the Safari.

The wading depth is circa 700 mm for a D3 and I guess a D4 and one of the obvious limiting factors about deep water crossing is getting water into the electrics which run these vehicles.

I have driven my standard D3 through water about 500 - 600 m deep (with care) with no snorkel and no problems but to go any deeper I would want a snorkel as a replacement engine is not cheap.

Hope this helps, but check out the above thread as it contains a fair bit of discussion on the topic.

    Regards,

    George

I think LR would be aware as it is sold as a "Raised Air Intake" not a 'Snorkel"

It helps with water ingress but is not sealed.

I made a removable snorkel for mine replacing and sealing the ductwork.
You should be able to do similar with the LR RAI.

    Yep,
Lots of discussion on this and I went for the RAI as an aftermarket fit because it looks better and you do not have to cut the inner guard to fit it. Lots of stuff on the other linked threads on how to make the RAI more waterproof.

    From the FAQ

    What snorkels are available?
Safari. Land Rover's own is not properly waterproof, which is why they call it a RAI, or Raised Air Intake. Avoid, but it's better than nothing.
