Hi Irondoc ... check out the "Windcheetah" range of racks - you don't have to drill or rivet into your vehicle to mount it - and the rack has a great range of accessories for carrying all sorts of things ... plus lots of crossbars.
cheers
Hi guys, I know the roof rail/rack thing has been done a bit, but i am trying to decide on accessories for a new 2.7 D4 purchase and was thinking of getting the extended roof rails.
They cost a bit, but i carry a bit of stuff on the roof (especially bikes) and like having a few crossbars up there. There are cheaper alternatives, but i guess there are some things i feel more comfy with getting installed by LR and I'm not too keen on drilling/riveting my car.
So, i am looking for some replies, hopefully from people who have got the extended rails, to the following questions:
-are you losing anything (other than cash) from getting the extended rails - eg, are there some racks/trays that won't fit with extended rails
-what crossbars fit across the front extended bit of the rails - only LR ones, or are there aftermarket ones?
thanks
lucas

Another vote for windcheetah, the rail kit is about $200.00 dosen't need drilling and attaches to the standard mount points. I have the 1.5m rack mounted on windcheetah rails on my D3.

Rino Rack do a set of rails and a short rail at the front then bars and some with longer legs for the front.
The Rhino's require some drilling and rivetting ... and Irondoc is not to keen on doing that ...
You don't have to drill the rhino ones. The pop rivet at the back of each is if you have a load at the back to stop the rail lifting, depends where to attach the rail.
The LR ones are a taller profile which resists this tendency.
Windcheater looks good value though.
so if you get the LR extended rails, what crossbars fit the front part of the extended rails?
Irondoc,
Obviously the LR ones do, they slide all the way to the front.
Seeing LR use most of the accessories from Thule, Kayak Carrier, Ski Carrier etc etc.
I would take it as a guess that Thule style cross bars may fit.
But, would check first.
I just used the LR ones.
Cheers
ahhh, so the LR extended rails are a track up front, i thought they were like other cars' roof rails up front that require some sort of foot pod.
thanks sniegy
cheers
