I have 6 of the 265/65x17 General Grabber AT2s on steel rims and 5 of the 255/55 x 18 on the original alloys. The are very good all round tyre. The 18s are for running around town, and the 17s are put on for every trip, even a weekend touring with no real offroad work. Yes, the D3 is not placarded for that size 17, but at least I can get them everywhere.

    Tyre Importing - Buyer beware

    Hi All,

I thought I'd share with you a few of the inconsistencies in freight costs occured when importing tyres from the US to Australia. These email dealings were done through an exceptionally helpful and tolerant MAC.

Last week I imported 4 GG AT2 from Tirerack.

    4 56HR8GRAT2XL 255/60R18 GENERAL*GRAB AT 2 XL 199.00

    SUBTOTAL: $796.00
    FREIGHT: $312.62
    ****FEDEX INT’L ECONOMY****
    TOTAL: $1,108.62

I wanted to order another 2 and was quoted

SHIPPING WAREHOUSE: 2 PKGS OF 1 TIRE PER PKG
FED ECONOMY (3-5 DAYS) - $ 340.74 SHIPPING METHOD FIE

The quote was also redone for 4 as confirmation because MAC didn't believe the FEDEX quote:

FED ECONOMY (3-5 DAYS) - $ 388.85 SHIPPING METHOD FIE
QUOTE FOR 4 TIRES SHIPPING FROM SB
SHIPPING WAREHOUSE: 4 PKGS OF 1 TIRE PER PKG

The price per tyre went from

    US$277 each for 4

    to

    US$296 each for 4

    to

    US$369 each for 2

I'd be most interested in hearing about any massive variations in Freight costs quoted to other importers.

Fitting/Balancing costs are necessary on top of these prices so the Melbourne Tyre Dealers prices are looking real good!!!!

I put Grabber 255/60 18s on my D3 a little while ago and have been very happy with them so far. Set me back $355 each (fitted, balanced, etc) from Jax in Toowoomba. For all the mucking about of importing them yourself, it seemed reasonable to me. One of the guys there used to work at Austral in Brisbane, so knows his way around Land Rovers as well.
    Cheers

5x GG AT2's for my OEM 18' wheels for $1620 including importing and fitting - no hassles at all and definitely no regrets.

    GG AT2's ALL good!
