Thread: Vibration under load at 100 to 120km/hr

Had this when my anti-roll bushes were on their way out (although mine vibrated at around 80 ~ 100 kph). Also had a bent control arm from a collision, which may have contributed. Do you also get the 'clunk' on corrugations or speed humps?

Check the wheel nuts as my old RRS did the same and it was 2 lose wheel nuts on the front wheels

Checked wheel nuts, all tight. The clunk only occurs when changing from coasting to acceleration, if you hold say 2nd or 3rd gear you can make the clunk very obvious. The vibration only occurs during load at 100kph plus, but is smooth as silk when coasting at the same speed.

Mine has started to vibrate at 100kph or so again only under load. Just had a re-con box put in which was juddering (not vibrating) at the change in gears at about sixty and again at 80 underload with harsh change downs (nothing then it would go in) Box now as smooth as silk but definate vibrtion unde load at 100. The centre bush for driveshaft is very soft when compared to other vehicles so probably on it's way out. Gearbox issues may have contributed to the failure.
Check this bush for black dust indicating over flex.
New drivshaft unit I am afraid.
I am monitoring mine at the moment but will probably replace before extended warranty expires.

Thanks Caver, sounds like you might have the answer. Is the the front or rear shaft where the rubber bush is and the obvious question, how much?

Rear shaft, under the heat shield.
Needs a whole new driveshaft I am afraid. About $800.

Hi, I was in conversation with a group of Disco owners last night. One related a similar vibration problem after a heavy duty desert crossing trip. It turned out to be a massive 8Kg build up of dried mud & debris between the bash-plate & the engine sump. It must have stopped the free movement of the engine on its mounts, as it is all ok now after the clean up.

Thanks Lobster, will remove both bash plates and heat shield, would love it to be a build up of crud, but think Caver might be on to it. It might also explain the clunk from coast to power as it sounds like it's coming from the rear. $800 would probably be a reasonable cost to fix, as the alternatives could easily be worse. On holidays down the coast at the moment, so will have to wait a few weeks, I hope.
