Apologies for taking this way off topic, but we all seem to be rambling around a bit here: can anyone confirm whether or not the 285/60 x 18" Cooper LTZs will fit in the standard spare wheel bay? They're high on my list of possibilities for when the 18 inch rims arrive for the 3.0 D4s (soonish now :)) - and this has been one matter of some uncertainty. Not sure if the D3 and D4 situation might be different here - perhaps to do with the slightly changed towbar set-up?

Precisely. In truth I think LR have probably gone up and Toyo have gone down and now LR is about equal or (and where it counts such as engine longevity) better than Toyota. I think the only drivetrain weakness and easily overcome in the new shape LR's seems to be the autos from what I can tell in terms of the sealed for life idea. If you service them just like the D1/D2 ZF they should last and last.

Hmm ok - didn't know that. So if 18" rims will not fit why have you been looking for 18" rims to fit the D4/RRS 3.0.

All confused now and I thought I had understood all the relevant threads:(.

What Gordon is saying is that the 18" LR rims will not fit the 3.0 SE/HSE or the RRS - which is why he has sourced an after-market wheel manufacturer to make specially specified 18 inchers that will fit these models. Apparently the clearances over/around the big brakes are very tight. Hope this eases the confusion - but hey - feel, free to still have that Bex & Bundy... :D

19" wheels & tyres will limit your off road ability although usually only in the medium to harder tracks.

Usually it is rocky terrain that causes the problem.

I have only ever had two punctures off road & these were with 19" MTR's aired down to 20lb on hard rocky steep tracks.

I have now tried 17", 18" & 19" on my D3 & found the 17's to be the best off road combination. In addition I have now found the LT 17" MTZ tyres to better on road than stock 18's.

I am sure the 19's are fine if you do not plan on particpating in harder trips.

Some people are now optioning 20's rather than 19's as there is more off road tyre options.

Pretty much anything is better than the OEM Wrangler tyres. :angel:

Graham had an engineer who was willing to sign off on the D3/D4 2.7 brakes on the D4 3.0L in NSW.

The 285/60 - 18's will be 799.2mm across get a tape measure and check the wheel well.

In some states they will also be illegal because of the excess diameter increase.

Thanks Mowog. Just done a quick and dirty measure and, while it ain't easy to get an accurate fix without dropping the spare out, it seems most unlikely they will fit - without being let down that is. This backs up info I've received from someone who has them on a D3 - he lets all the air out and then has to do some shoving to get a reasonable fit (and pump up again when required of course). Not surprising really, given the extra 35-40 mm diameter over the stock size, but a bit disappointing nonetheless :(. Size is legal in WA, which is some sort of blessing. More thinking required, it seems.
