D4 Australian price compared to UK

Test drove a D4 2.7 yesterday......very nice. I was looking around online today and came across the UK price list.

At the current exchange rate the HSE model goes for $79,000 (inc 17.5% VAT)

Are we being ripped off on the exchange rate or what?

Quick calculation of taking away the VAT, then adding GST and luxury car tax comes to $66,000 + $6,600 + $1,500 = $74,100 - That's about the entry model price in Australia!!! Land Rover Australia please explain?

Why should Australian prices bear any relation to UK prices? Land Rover can and will charge what the market will bear (pay for).

Your calculations didn't include freight either...

The sad fact is that there are no mathematics required....no exchange rate calculations nor considerations…….yes, we do and have always got 'ripped off' on car prices in Australia. It has nothing to do with Land Rover or any other brand. Cars in the UK and US are far more affordable than Oz...it has always been that way and after their economies floundered recently, I suggest you could drive an even harder deal in both of those countries. You cannot look at the exchange rate….you need to make it relative….how well does the currency of that country travel, as in how well does it spend in that country? In other words, do I need to spend two years’ worth of average incomes to buy a nice (average) car or one years’ coin or less than one.

There are exportation/importation costs and taxes, etc for Australia, but I think the big driver is more about the small market in Oz. There is little competition in certain types of car markets and very few relative sales. In a country like the US where millions plus of cars must get sold every year, it has to be competitive. All sorts of gear used to be the same...sport, camping etc.

It is changing...the US has flooded Oz with competitive cars...Jeep, Chrysler, etc....'cause they are screaming for sales. The US volume sales concept is alive and well...Bunnings, BCF, etc....

The Japs had the edge on affordability and tech but the Euro's have fought back hard and you see far more Pugs, Citroens, and Renaults than you would have ever seen before. And that is the low end of the market. I've never seen as many Euro high end cars in all my life as I have seen in the last 5 -10 years in Australia. So they are becoming cheaper.

It’s a moving feast thou…who can afford a house these days….I suggest a lot less families than 20 years ago!

However...LR....supply and demand....if we ever see the market flooded with new LRs, then you will see price drops....

    What’s the chances of that???

    Cheers,

    Kev.

HSE Lux model in the US goes for under $60k...

Long term financial planning will make LR fix their currency rates some time into the future... and then there's the logistics of supporting such a small user base so far away... not too hard to see why it's where it is at the moment...

buy in austalian and get ripped off

I was looking a a top line rifle scope. Well over a $1000 cheaper landed here from America. A mate is working for the distributior here, he told me the wholesale price they get is often well over the lowest retail price overseas.
Go on a long holiday, buy your D4 in the UK. Drive it arround Europe for 12 months or down to China ( that would be fun )and you might get it in tax free here. Not sure as the tax rule have probebly changed on bring your own car in. It was 12 months = no sales tax import duties about 15 years ago!
A cousin working in Japan brought a new truck home each year. He still has a shed full of low KM Jap cars and 4wds

Importer gouging is rife here. It's getting worse year by year.
I have noticed that US freight/postage is being hiked-up as
they realise how cheap they are , and profit from made-up
postal charges . Some want over 3 times the postage of others ...
We're still quids in though . It doesn't help that retailers don't
want to discount here , and would rather not get a sale .
This is also on product they do not hold in stock . Idiots !
That's not a service : to Hell with 'em !

I could never get my head around how the US could sell a car (the Monaro), built in Oz, for cheaper than you could here...even with the shipping costs....

Show's you what the mark up must be.

many people are already shopping online to buy their lr parts direct from the uk because the prices are soooo much cheaper. You can buy a safari snorkel for your d3 from the uk and have it landed to your door cheaper than you can buy it locally.

Apart from the speedo being in miles (and I think they have a km/h marker anyway) I dont think there would be much difference in the uk and aus spec versions of the d4. Showing it complied with Aus adr's to enable registration therefore shouldn't be too costly.

who knows maybe it wont be too long before people start importing complete cars and bypassing lr aus.

Perhaps the only thing preventing this is the potential for warranty claim problems.

We are at least cheaper than Singapore!

I just got back from Singapore and was amazed that a D4 2.7 was about $340k. Lots of taxes involved.
    Cheers
