Rare but know of a couple of noisey transfer cases on early build. Loose chain drive.
I have had the D3 on the Hoist today, with the scope in ear trying to find
auditable noise from the car.
Took off disks etc and checked wheel bearings, all good.
Replace Transfer fluid, at $55.00 per litre ex LRWas a bit dirty
Ran car on hoist in gear to check any noise.
May have a bit of transfer noise. Not real sure if it is.
Has anyone has any issues, and if so what did you encounter???
Cheers Dave

Rare but know of a couple of noisey transfer cases on early build. Loose chain drive.
I've got a fuzzy noise coming from somewhere - it's intermittent and I can control it via small pressure on my accelerator pedal.
I heard it (very faintly at the time) when I bought the car - over the last 12000km it's got gradually louder. Doesn't seem to affect anything, only my peace of mind. Took it into a dealer who put the stethascope on it on the hoist - said he thought it was coming from torque convertor and for $1200.00 would pull it out and send it to an auto specialist to look at.
Have declined his offer
keep us informed

So, not transfer box but transmission?
You could try a flush first.
It could be the front diff centre.
The noise travels, and leads to the trans.
I have just replaced both front & rear centres, and all good.
But what you have described is starting to become the norm for some of the higher km D3's.

Hi Busman,
I've heard of one guy in the UK who is in the process of changing his transfer box after 395k miles (>635k km).
There are one or two others with possibly the same issue (still to be sorted).
So, it is possible, but not common.
Best Wishes,
Peter

Characture I assume? Towing heay loads for aliving too.
Some confusion? Transfer box or transmission?
Transfer box is the one behind the transmission that puts the ower to the front and back and engages low range.
Hi Caver,
Yep, Character.
In his case it is definitely transfer box. Can't answer for others yet.
Best Wishes,
Peter
