    Dealer recommendations revisited

Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions when I asked for dealer recommendations. I have spoken to and received quotes from about half a dozen dealers and ended up going with the most expensive...by three thousand dollars.

I don't throw money away, but the standard of the other dealers was so awful that I thought I would be better to pay the extra and hope that it translated into better service down the track.

I made the decision when I telephoned the salesman one morning and was told that he wouldn't be in until 10AM because he was picking up a customers car for service. On top of that, this dealer (Massaro Motors in Morwell) got the biggest number of compliments when I posted the question on this site.

So thanks again everyone for the advice - now I just have to try not to be a cat on a hot tin roof until it arrives! Very excited at the prospect, and very, very impatient.

    Cheers all,

    Paul

Congrats, I waited five months and two weeks. That was completely forgotten on the drive home. Worth the wait as they say

Ahh… that new car smell. Congrats and thumbs up for backing the good service.
Dealers take note, It's a pretty simple formula. People are happy to pay for good service and not very happy to pay for bad. Give good service and people will talk about it, give bad service and people will also talk about it.
    Enjoy the new ride.

Well if I'd seen your question I certainly would NOT have recommended them after the way they have treated me and my colleagues.

It seems really hit and miss with the dealers. I had a terrible encounter at ULR, though others recommend them. Darren at MLR and David at Blacklocks both get big thumbs up from me on various visits.

A salesman and the excercise of buying is only a blink of the eye in the saga of owning any car and once the car is delivered the sales person steps out of the scene. He usually has no authority [or interest] in warranty/repairs/servicing of the car or customer care. Get this bit wrong when buying and it may cost you a few extra dollars to own but that is all.

The major consideration therefore in any deal/ownership is the service department and the service manager. Get this bit wrong and you're in for a terrible and frustrating ownership experience. Get it right and life with your new car will be a breeze.

Bugger! Would you give me more detail please? It is probably not too late for me to jump ship, although I don't want to. I just hope it wasn't a service department problem. PM me please if you don't want to comment publicly.

    Thanks,

    Paul

Yes, it does seem hit and miss. Darren was my first encounter with a Land Rover dealer and nearly caused me to go Toyota, and Blacklocks seemed fine but never followed up with the paperwork.

I understand that I can get service done anywhere during warranty period, so will probably keep visiting Fred Smith. In ten years he hasn't stuffed up anything of mine, which is pretty good.
