Thread: D4 Privacy Glass option vs Aftermarket Tint

Most privacy glass does not inhibit UV rays very much at all.

A 'heat shield' film is the usual form of protecting the vehicle inhabitants in this case and this can be done by the tinter who does your front windows. The 'heat shield' adds the UV protection to the privacy glass which is only darkened glass.

Since having a biggish SCC cut out of my right hand I've done some research on this. My understanding is that standard tinting does little to cut out UV. There's a new product on the market endorsed by the Cancer Council that is rated as UPF50.

Tintacar has quoted me $440 for my D4 when it arrives.

We got this tint on our Honda Odyssey when we bought it last year. It was about $100 more than the standard Tint-a-Car products from memory. It certainly seems to make a big difference and we've had no signs of any wear or peeling so far, and are planning on getting it on our recently purchased Disco 3. I might also see if we can get he rearmost side windows blacked out in addition so people can't see what's in the load area so easily (and to give the dog a bit more shade!). Cheers, Gavin

The glass already incorporates a UV filter which at least significantly reduces the sun's heat. I thought going from a D2 with its standard darker tint on the rear windows that the D4 would get hot but it feels no different to the D2, which had UV glass on all the windows.

When I visit the dealer next week I'll see if I can find a D4 in stock with privacy glass and what markings are stamped on the glass.

In the past my tinter has used Madico films which are claimed to cut 99% of UV rays.

Advantage of privacy glass is that it is not a film so cannot get damaged or scratched. Especially for the back.
Maybe privacy for the rear and cancer council stuff for thr fronts?

I recall reading in the NRMA magazine that NRMA, RACQ, RACV shared the opinion that normal vehicle glass cut circa +98% UV, and that window tint provided no further UV protection, nor any heat shielding/reducing benefits. They had even asked the Window Tint industry representative body to provide them independant third party proof of their memebers claims, but that proof had yet to be forth coming. And so, NRMA, RACQ, RACV continue to maintain the stance that window tint only has a comsmetic function. There was no mention of these Cancer Council Tints.
