Basil - Come and Talk to Us
Basil, also known on AULRO as Fawlty, also known as Ian is a lurker on AULRO but never posted. I have known and worked with Fawlty for about 10 years and most importantly he owns a 07MY D3 TDV6 that he has owned since new and now has about 130,000km on it.
He has dealt with most of the common D3 issues by himself without the resources of AULRO.
One day a few years back Basil was offroading in his new Subaru Outback and got stuck for a long time in a valley because the subie could not climb out. When he did get out he was straight down to Rolfs in Canberra and bought a new D3 TDV6 off the showroom floor - it came with rear aircon so that his vicious mutt could sit on the back seat and travel in airconditioned comfort.
Basil was happy with his new purchase but soon came to realise that to get the crappy Landrover spotties to work, the computer had to know they were there, then he learnt all about LED trailer lights and the D3, then a gearbox issue put the car off the road and he soon learnt about the stealers lack of expertise, Landrover ambivalence, and problems with the local Canberra specialist (I cannot say more here). He likes General Grabbers as his boots and has a small property where the D3 gets a good workout as well as regular trips to the Apple Isle down south.
On his property he as an ex mil landie (series 3 I think) that he uses to pull his D3 out of bogs (his D3 recovery vehicle) - in a quite dangerous manner from what I have heard.
Recently he has had a complete ECU failure on top of a hill offroad with the D3 having to be recovered to the dealer for repair.
Also the D3 did manage to get 80 litres of ULP in the tank and driven until it lost power but was then switched off. It seems the engine management system saved the engine but some expense was expended to remove the tank and drain it as well as the rest of the fuel system.
Fawlty has a wealth of experiences with the D3 that would be of interest to all who has a D3. I have encouraged him to become a poster on AULRO rather than a lurker and I would encourage you to sent him a PM inviting him to come out of the closet and join us.
Cheers
Garry
