newbie with some daft questions for the experts

    Hi Everyone,

Just joined and hopefully about to join the owners group very soon. Recent new family status has turned our lovingly self modified 2 door wrangler into a no go for our 4wd tow vehicle and we're now having to go bigger. We loved the Jeep thing, especially as it got a fair bit of attention from the Toyota and Nissan brigade out in the bush. And so we'd like to maintain a bit of difference hence the D4 idea. So we habe narrowed our preference down to 2 choices, a Pathfinder or D4 (I totally accept the absolute and unarguable difference in performance, build, quality and price, but I'm still not sure what is the best way to go). So I have a couple of Q's if you don't mind. Sorry, they're probably novice newbie stuff.

I've been advised to go for a 2.7 and option it up to 7 seats and a few other bits. Main reason is the daft 19inch road focused rims. But I really like BGF's (tried and trusted so really this is a personal issue) and even the 18inch rims on the 2.7 will have to go. Can I fit 17's on it and what are the options? (annoyingly the Pathy comes in 17inch, even the new 3ltr power house one, so a quick tick for them)

Snorkel, who makes these for Landrover?

    Winch capable steel bar? ...ARB?

Now this one might sound so daft, but can you drive extended journeys at cruising speed and all other conditions in the high clearance raised air setting. Our road off camper trailer is high and will be nose diving on the standard hitch height, even with the Mitchell hitch adaption.

I'll probably have a load more Q's on mods later, once I'm hopefully a new proud owner. At the moment my biggest hurdle is getting over the rim sizes.

    thanks for some feedback.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
I am by no means the experienced one here, but after hanging out here I can comment that:
    1) There is no fitting the 17 inch rims on the 3.0. 18 inch rims seemed to limited to a model that needed a group purchase/import, and it is one of the most recent posts (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...s-d4-3-0l.html)

    2) Snorkel - LR make a "Raised Air Intake" which is not waterproof. Safari make the waterproof snorkel

    3) Winch capable steel bar - ARB and Opposite Lock and ECB make them (The links go to the discussion threads).

    4) Driving at height - there are several devices that allow this but it looks like "LLAMS" is the go. It is a in-cabin knob that will allow you to add/reduce height to any of the factory preset heights.

No offense meant to you, but a quick search on the forum will yield useful results and there won't be too many to sort through as it seems people are pretty good at not starting too many new threads about the same things. Hope the above is useful to you, and hope you join the fold soon.

    Cheers!

I have the 2.7TD 7 seater and absolutely love it, as does the rest of the family. Great ride, handling and features.

As the other questions have been answered if you want to run in standard height and are using a regular tow ball hitch get yourself an "alumi stinger" hitch available in 2", 4", 6", 8" & 10" drop/rise (rise is 1" shorter for each range).

I only mention these as the ride is harsher when the suspension is in off road height.

And remember no question is a daft question, keep em coming.

    Good luck with your decision.

Thanks everyone for the great replies. Plenty for me to read up on. (i'm still searching and back reading through the eons of data)

Brad, it's a treg hitch but will look into what you have suggested.

It seems that tyres are, as with other vehicle groups, SUCH a hot and on-going topic.

cheers everyone, hope to place my order very soon.

    Welcome Ozzy119.

Eddomak has done the hard yards for you, but I''ll throw my 2cents in since I believe I'm in a good position to make comment: I currently have both a 2.7TD D4 & a R51 Pathie. Both modified/accessorised.
Both have to tow an offroad caravan and an offroad trailer during their lives.

    And it's no contest. D4, D4, D4, D4, D4, D4, D4, D4 !!!!!

The Pathie requires it's factory springs & shocks to be ditched to provide significantly improved onroad and offroad behaviour. Also will need helper air springs (PolyAirs) in the rear, otherwise it sags something dreadful when towing any decent load. When this is done, the onroad performance is great. But the lack of articulation and a poor traction control system makes the Pathie a very poor offroad choice. Offroad you have to pick the right lines and the vehicle struggles, compared to Prados etc make a cake of more difficult lines.

By comparison, a bog standard unmodified D4 will drive & perform better onroad, off road, and towing. The difference is actually lightyears ahead.

Three years ago I was in your position: Pathie or a D3? I got a Pathie.
    Now I have a D4.
Since then, on reflection I wished I had taken the plunge earlier & got the D3 instead of the Pathie.

    You can fit 17's on a 2.7 litre D4.
265 x 70 x 17's will fit on a D4 albeit a bit of a truggle to get the spare in the wheel well..
As previously mentioned you can get BFG's ATKO in 265 x 65 x 18 & they will fit.
They are horrendously expensive in Australia however you can get them landed in Australia from Tirerack in the US for about $300 ea.

    Regards

    Chuck

    Ozzy 119,

Ozzie, try the FAQ at the head of the D3/D4 channel. Most of your questions have been answered already.
For a couple of your specifics, look up Performance wheels BB6. They come in a 17x8" and are rated higher than the std LR wheel. Others have already directed you to the D4 options in 18", if you must have 18's on a 3.0 litre. If you can't find enough data in your search, send a pm to GGHAGGIS.
As far as hitches go, search for Mitchell Bros Hitch. Looks good and can be used with any 50mm Reese style lug. If the fixed height offset lugs are still not high enough for you, you can use the Hayman Reese weight distribution lug ( adjustable with cams etc ) However DO NOT use the bars that come with the kit. You don't need them anyway.

If you can't work it out, send me a PM with the ball height of your trailer when levelled. I can work out which lug will do the job for you.

You will also find plenty of threads on the pros and cons of the D4 2.7 against the 3.0 litre. Have a good read. Seriously, even the 2.7 has no competition amongst the other 4WD's ( including the Pathfinder ) other than the range of models in the LR range.

    Happy hunting.

    We replaced an R51 Pathie with a 2.7 D3.
Just the interior room is a huge difference. The Paithie just feels cramped & does not have the seat room of a D3/D4. Neither my wife or I could get comfortable in the front passenger's seat (we are both short), there was always a bit of your back that was unsupported, I think because of the way the seat folds. The Pathie was both heavy on fuel (diesel) & always felt like didn't have the Kw or Nm they advertised. Ours was a 6 speed manual & even when towing a ton or so you had to work the gears like mad to get anywhere. This is not to mention little stuff like the glass door opening handle on the back is black, park in the sun for a couple hours then go to open the glass = burnt hand. trim falling off, the plastic cover in the back & on the back of the rear seats peeling & slippery so even the groceries & school bags slide about, glove box door falling off, overhead console falling out & so on
No such problems with the D3.
The D3 is spacious, comfortable, reliable after almost 2 years, tows like a ripper, pretty good on fuel & the drive is just 10 X better.
The Pathie was cheaper to buy & you really now it once you drive the Disco. I remember the day we pulled up at the dealers in the Pathie & test drove the D3, the wife said "This is twice the car!".
A couple of other things I really noticed is the vision is way better in the D3, the ride is better on all surfaces & the D3 is far quieter on all surfaces.
There are a couple of things that annoy me about the D3, spare wheel, tow hitch & the steel bar behind the 3rd row which means it's hard to pack stuff in there.
But overall the 2 cars are not even in the same league, the D3 is just that much better.
Is it worth the extra money? Yep, it is that much better.
