Hi all,
Did a spot of 4WDriving yesterday up near the Thompson Dam Vic.
Here is my scenario.....In the D4, 19" MTR's, e-diff, going down a steep slippery clay tack, Mud Ruts, Low range, S2 selected.
Both vehicles in front that were with me went sideways and became bogged. I stopped and reversed up the hill. When I got to a freshly made and spongey run off, the D4 went all out of shape and I ended up facing down the run off and not being able to reverse up because of lack of traction. Had a wall of mud behind both low side wheels.
Once we had sorted out the other vehicles, I decided to dig the mud out from behind my wheels and lower my tyre pressures to around 25psi as they were at 36 / 33.
When I strated my vehicle, the terrain response would not work and there were all sorts of messages coming up on the dash.........like 'Gearbox Fault' , 'Normal height safe mode' etc etc. I tried to reverse but found that I could not engage low range and had lost alot of power.
Turned engine off and waited for a while. When I re-started the vehicle, there was a loud grinding noise coming from underneath, like gears trying to mesh. I turned it off straight away.
When I re-started it, it had the same noise. I selected 'D' and drove forward slightly. The grinding noise went and the Terrain Response worked again. I was then able to reverse out.
This has not happened since.
I have also had doubts about the e-diff working as I have been bogged in places that others haven't.....with no terrain response, diff locks etc.
Has anyone else had this same or similar experience????
Have my Disco booked in for its 48K service this Tuesday, so I will be running through my experience with them.

Hi Craig,
I pick my D4 up in a week or so . I have no hands on with a D4 but was wondering if the grinding was maybe the park brake solenoid not selecting on/off ? You said you drove forward ?
Just a thought. If it was anything much in the tansmission it woudnt take long to die completely.

Hi all, had my service today.
The fault showed up when they plugged into my computer, however there was no explanation as to why it did what it did
Yes, I do have the e-diff and it is working.
Let you know if it happens again.

SupporterSounds like an software fault caused the problem. When going from low range to high the car needs to be in neutral to allow for gear meshing as you said so I wonder if the car got its knickers in a knot and decided to change hi/low range when still in gear causing the lovely grinding noise. ???? All the other crap that came up can only be software related.
The only time I have seen a gearbox fault in my d4 what when I wiggled the electrical plug on the bottom of the transfer case when I was under there having a sticky beak. Freaked out thinking sh-t, what have I done, switched the car off and restarted, fault was gone
My dealer will email the UK with any problems they cannot explain and as a rule the UK will respond with a solution or reason. I emailed LR directly when my heater was playing up as the correct operation was not know over here. The UK confirmed my concerns and the car went back and the dealership found a kinked heater hose behind the block. All fixed. Perhaps worth a try as there nothing worse then not getting a satisfactory answer.
Don't forget you can also do a self test of the electronics via the service screen in your satnav if fitted. This will give you any fault codes

Only entertainment system fault codes, in there.
You can get an APP for iphone now that reads and resets faults , blue tooth out of OBD11 socket.

Thanks for your help guys.
Don't have the satnav, so checking it out that way is not an option.
Sounds like she had her knickers in a knot as Brad72 suggested.
Will be looking out for the fault in the future.
