    Harsh gear change

    Hi all,

Been reading post on this forum with interest since I joined in December 2010. It's been very informative. We bought a 2.7 d4 and it's been a real fantastic to date (both on and off road). Certainly shut up a few LR knockers!!

Since we took delivery I have notice that the some of the gear changes can happen with what I describe a thump! This is especially noticeable when rolling away through a slow corner. At first I thought it may be just my use of the fly by wire throttle but the longer it goes the more I feel that it could be a issue done almost 10,000kms). On the freeway today I noticed the same soft thump if I lift of and get back on the throttle (and I mean a gentle back on the throttle). After getting out of a 5 speed auto ve gts I would have expected a little better from a state of the art 6 speed zf tranny???

    Any ideas??

Hey MC , Without a doubt the gear changes should be so smooth that you hardly notice them. They can do alot of tweaking of the gearbox via the canbus, so IMHO the easiest was to settle any concerns is take it back to the dealer {i assume you bought it new} and tell them what's going on and get them to plug in the computer and see if they can solve the problem. It won't {or at least shouldn't} cost you anything under warranty.
As far as quietening LR knockers, yes i have a few non LR friends all of whom now are wary of sledging LR's after i matched them all weekend in some tough spots down south and i was still running my highway 19's LOL.
Good luck, I'm sure it can be sorted by the dealer
    cheers

I had the same thunky changedown symptoms in a 2007 D3.

I mentioned it to the dealer before the last service, and they "reset the adaptive gearbox and updated the gearbox ECU to the latest software" or something similar.

I was very dubious that this would fix things, but it has in fact pretty well eliminated the problem. Worth a try.

Mine can be a bit clunky at times but I think it is the box trying to adapt to the driving conditions. However, every time my car goes into the shop (2009 D4 3.0L)...even when it was just a light fitting replaced.....it drives so much smoother when I get it back. They must do something to the gear-box.....it's very noticeable.....as in, I suspect they just run diagnostics or they do a patch or something...but it's been 100%....every visit to LR, smoother transmission. Drives very, very smoothly for a while.

Shame you can't replicate that 'reset' at home.....or can you?

    Cheers,

    Kev.

This is the annoying aspect of D3/4 drivetrain . Mine doesn't hang in there. There's so much slack between diffs & transfer , (which can be
experienced by letting the vehicle roll forward after placing in "P" ) that
    I don't think it's just the ZF . ZF 2X4 and 4X4 cars don't kick ie. Audi
Quattro , Golf GTI ....... The Sahara doesn't do it either ..............
