Busman, how much did the cruise control fix cost you?

Mine has started saying Cruise Control not permitted so I suspect I need the same fix.

    Hi Dave,

I purchased a rotary coupler from the UK for 149 pounds landed.
At Local LR Dealership $680.00 inc gst
The coupler is located in the steering wheel assembly, and is easy to install.
The coupler relates to cruise control & SRS functions in some aspects.
    Cheers Dave

What is this rotary coupler thing?

I have heard of replacing in the steering wheel, what seems to be called a clock spring, but the term rotary coupler is new to me.

Also I just started to get "Cruise Control Not Available" messages on my display and wondered what that was all about -whether it was just a random error message or a sign of something developing.

    I have 125,000 km on my 2005 4.4V8 now.

THe Rotary Coupler is another word for a Clock Spring.
These have a common fault in the wiring, and will cause a cruise control issue.
My cruise control was intermittant, and also the SRS red seat belt light would illuminate.
This was all down to the one issue, the Rotary Coupler/Clock Spring.
There was a recall in years past, but mostly for the earlier D3 models.
But having said that, it seems the issue is developing in the later models as well.
You will find replacing this unit, will hope to assist with the symptoms you are experiencing.
    Cheers Dave

At least the error messages do not shut the 3 down.

It always fascinates me how a trouble somewhere translates to an error message or messages that somehow just seem distant from the real problem. In this case, an indicated cruise control and or indicated restraint system concern is a really a problem inside the steering wheel - go figure?. Fortunately, we tend to get sort of used to error messages and know for the most part that the 3 will still continue to run for quite awhile yet while we figure out what the real problem is - and most often, fixing it is not a big deal, but finding the problem can be.

I am somehow reminded of perhaps 15 years back when fuel computers were still new technology. Cadillac had a problem in a few, (very few), cars when the fuel gauge showed perhaps half full, the engine just shut off.

It took them a fair while to figure out just how the engine shutdown was being triggered - that a software glitch was somehow deciding that a less than full gas tank was being interpreted as an empty gas tank and therefore the engine should not be running, hence the software sent a shutdown signal.

I gather the out shot of that was the concept that software should be fault tolerant and that there should be various limp modes built into the programming to allow a vehicle to continue to be operational.

That is likely where our "drop to stops" and "no faster than" constraints evolved from, but at least we are not walking.

    Could be worse

The D3/4/RRS is an expensive, complex bit of kit...and it's going to hurt as bits wear out.

Still.....a mate of mine broke a wheel on his Porche Carrera.....almost 3K NOT including the tyre......

Rotary Coupler replaced free, and without asking for it to be done!!

My 2005 TDV6 SE had the brake safety recall work two weeks ago.

I was pleasantly surprised that the work list included the repair of the rotary coupler when I dropped the car off to have the brake work done.

There was no charge for either repair ... and now the intermittent cruise control drop-out has gone.

Perhaps people with symptoms referable to the rotary coupler might discuss this matter with their local LR dealer, and hope their experience is as happy as mine?
