Dave, how many kms did you get out them?
I read of alot of people trying different tyres on their D3.
So my 2 cents worth
I have a D3 TDV6 S, so l have 17 inch rims>
The have tried a few different tyre types, and have been very very happy with the following>
New pattern Bridgestone Dueller A/T
LT255/65/17
No, I don't work for a tyre company, but l have found
these tyres wearing very well and even.
Quite chunky with a little road noise, but fantastic in the wet, sand and mud.
I have tried Coopers etc etc, and the capabilities and tyre wear was average to say the least.
Maybe worth exploring your options, when you look at replacing your tyres.
Cheers Dave

I thought these might be good but got cold feet at reports of generally being fast wearing. However this size is branded as LT and was supposed to be made specifically for Oz conditions so could be a different compound. I'll be watching for reports on how they last.

I have a set of L/T D694's on the D2a and they are wearing very well, same as Busman they have roughly about 15K's on them.
Very little road noise and excellent in the wet, pretty much a good all rounder. The ride can get a bit harsh though if the pressures aren't set right after towing. They do pick up small stones though because of their thread pattern and love chucking them in all directions.
Still most A/T tyres would have similar issues on the roads we often drive on.
I met a bloke recently with a 100 series Toyo who had them fitted and he hated them, said the tyre wall was to weak and his Cruiser rolled around compared to the BFG A/T's he normally had fitted. His weren't L/T's though as I have not had this issue with mine.
cheers,
Terry
Thanks Dave. Are you running on the standard 17x7" LR rims? Did you consider 265/65s or were they too big for your State or too wide for the 7" rims (we have relatively relaxed rules in WA and I think I'll run out of clearance before I run out of legality!).
I have just bought 6 OEM 17x7" wheels to swap for my 18" wheels when having fun (my car is a MY08 TD HSE), and am looking for a good dirt road touring/off road play tyre for them. I was leaning towards importing a set of Goodyear Silent Armor in 255/70 R17 but learned that they recommend not less than 7.5" rims. I could get GG AT2's in that size which are approved for 7" rims, but have read mixed reports of their toughness (sidewall strength seems to be the main issue). I'm wary about moving to a full mud tyre as they're clearly less good in sand, are noisier and have poorer braking performance on bitumen roads: although the recent tyre test in 4WD Action seemed to suggest that the BFG MT KM2s could be a workable compromise (braking distance apart). I wish I could try a few different tyres and then decide!
I have to get off the pot soon as we're heading off for a big trip on 16th April and I need to get my new tyres fitted before then.
Cheers, Gavin
Hi Gavin,
I am running standard rims, and they work fine for me.
The BFG KM2 are a great tyre, and do perform well.
They may be a bid agressive for around town use, but certainly very capable offroad.
I found the new Dueller pattern beefy, and the overall ability of the tyre is great on or off road.
Of course this is my view, based on the applications l intend to use the tyres for.
Cheers Dave

You shouldn't believe everything you read in the magazines or on tyre manufacturers websites! Mud tyres are as good or better in the sand under the same conditions as an All Terrain or Road tyre.
If you have 2 sets of rims, why not have best off road rubber for the times you play without having to compromise your on road manners at other times?
I have a set of BFG Muds on 17" rims for playtime and they are awesome on the D3.
