    Rear storage shelf

I am starting to design storage for the rear of my 7 seat D4 for future travels. With three sons we need to maximise space.

I want to fix a shelf on the top of the rear sides where the small storage boxes are. This should give me approx 470mm clearance below and up to 500mm clearance above, plenty of storage options.

To do this I am hoping to remove some of the plastic moulding, including those storage boxes, and fix a shelf to something a bit more solid than plastic.

Has anyone had a go at pulling out the plastic mouldings or installing a custom rear shelf?

I will post any pictures when done.

    Cheers and thanks

    Chris

Ditto for me ... those plastic side bits are a waste of space.

I'd like to get rid of the 3rd row seats to use the under-floor space but I have nowhere to store the seats where vermin wont destroy them. Maybe I need to find some large plastic boxes.

I also use the D3 as a 7-seater and just made a simple box frame out of alumnium square tube with a marine ply base that is kept in place by four turnbuckles connecting to the factory tie-downs. Works for us very well.

I currently have the attached (hope photos work - my first attempt) aluminium frame built shelf for rear of D4. It is 470(h)x710(d)x1030(w). It is not tied down and is not the full length from tailgate to rear seat, which is useful for storing things like jerries just behind the tailgate. I use corflute to protect the base (it came with a pallet of pavers).

This shelf works well, allowing me to store heavy things below and light above. It is made of aluminium quad frame from Capral aluminium and easy very easy to work with.

As I mentioned in my first post, I am hoping to have a shelf that is fixed to the car frame where the small storage boxes are. My aim is to do away with the legs that limit my storage ability below the shelf and have a more secure base.

I have also attached a photo of frame that I had set up in the D2 (apologies for clutter). Panels have mostly been removed. The top left hand space had a fridge and fridge slide attached and the whole unit was strapped down. We travelled for 6 months on some rough roads and no fractures or stress.

    Cheers, Chris

An update on progress with the storage shelves.

I have given up on the idea of removing the side storage boxes. It looked too hard to do so without damaging them. Also looking underneath the parts that I had lifted up it seemed too difficult to secure a stable shelf across the width of the rear storage space.

I am currently designing shelves similar to that described below.

I have taken out the third row of seats, which was a one hour job once I had worked out what to do. Good instructions from disco3.uk.

    Cheers Chris

    Another Shelf Solution

    Hi Chris,

I'm not as handy as you are so I had this built. I designed it and then got the guys at the Department of the Interior (Blakehurst, Sydney) to build it (not cheap!).

I believe you need a cargo barrier if you have a car full of stuff, especially with kids in the back. This setup then uses the cargo barrier as the attachment point for the front edge of the shelf. One steel leg on the left holds the rear left corner up (attached to cargo tie down bolt). There is an upright in the middle and another on the right.

I can still get the left 3rd row seat up so I can get at the spare tyre lowering bolt.

The top shelf has an edge around it and tie down hooks. I have a fear of something sliding off the top shelf and straight through one of the side or rear windows. I also put a cargo net over everything on the top shelf.

Add some plastic crates and everything just slides in and out. We’ve done a few trips away with this setup and all works well.
