    Broken inner front CV

Has anyone busted an inner front CV?

I got into a sticky situation on the weekend witch required the use of my winch which promptly failed as the bolt holding the cable to the spool fell out. (doh should of checked that when I got the car). I then got a bit over enthusiastic with the throttle a busted the CV on an exposed root.

I managed to fix the winch and drag my way out of the situation with assistance from a Ford Courier and the a 4WD tractor.

A D3 with a broken CV will not drive any wheels even with an E-Diff. The computer does not see a spinning wheel as the sensors are in the wheel hubs and you just sit there.

Apparently the inner CV is not replaceable without doing the drive shaft as well and they are only available from LRA or second hand from TRS. Both are expensive.

I broke an rear outer CV, and once had a retaining pin go on the front (I think inner), both on a D3.

I could drive in Rock Crawl (low range) or GGS, but it tended to lose drive in corners.

    Cheers,

    Gordon

It seems that the RH shaft can pull out of its retaining clip at full or near droop, significant lock and a boot-full of power. I've read about repairs being done in the bush as long as a new clip is on hand so perhaps that's all that's happended to yours.

CV inner ring cracked and the drive shaft was slipping inside it. Had to replace both shafts and CVs from diff to hub as the inner CV is not available on it's own.
Mechanic confirmed it was drivable in rock crawl as that's how he moved it into the workshop. I learnt another new thing.

Doesn't the CDL lock when any of the TR settings are selected - so should have been drivable on any of these.

It only changes the degree of slip allowed, so if not moving it wont try to prevent wheelslip. I wonder what would happen if the ABS sensor for the particular wheel was unplugged - probably nothing other than causing ABS faults which would trigger the suspension ecu to adopt its safe height.

Yes, probably another thing that should be added to the outback spares kit!

On my to-do list is to find out if the D4 uses the same shaft part# as the D3 (same part# = same problem?) and get a spare clip or 2 too.
