Shatter??
Or shudder??

Hi,
I have a Discovery 3 turbo diesel and after my 120km service I found that on take off it would shatter. It started off with shattering but now when I take off it appears that the transmission slips and goes into gear suddenly. The transmission oil has been changed but there is no improvement. I was thinking that it may be the converter. Any ideas?![]()

This is a common problem, and many users have reported the problem. It's been said that the torque converter and / or the clutch plates go bad in them. Some say a double flush will fix the problem, or accelerate the demise. I talked with my guy at Centurion Gearbox and Diff and he said;

On your previous mail you have asked me on 6HP transmissions?
What we experience on the Diesel models more frequent as on the V8 models was a Torque converter SHUDDER feels like a vibration under load in 3rd gear accelerating, this was more an oil viscosity problem not Torque Converter failure although TC replacement was the cure.
The lock-up clutch plate inside the TC had an abnormal shine to it (Glazing as we would call it)
We are in the process on rebuilding these TC as there weren’t clutch plates available. I would phone my supplier for some more info on Lock-up clutch plates availability.

Hi All I have a D3 Deisel 2007 and recently it has begun to shutter when under load going up slight inclines. My mechanic diagnosed this as the torgue converter and quoted $3500 for replacing the torque converter, replacing the transmission sump with a steel one and replacing the transmission fluids. Does this sound like a fair diagonsis and price for the repairs? Look forward to your comments, thank you in advance. Clancy
I think that if you are keeping the D3/LR3 I'd be doing more than just the TC / Fluid change.

As mentioned the alloy particles would be in most of the solenoids, I'd be replacing them at the same time.

Do a google search on ZF 6HP26. They are in lots of vehicles and are pretty well regarded. It might help identify likely problem causes.

Your on the right track, the pan upgrade gets rid of the oil pick up strangling itself issue as the oil deteriorates, the upgrade pan has a larger pick up.
As the oil gets dirtier it starts to clog up the little holes spotted all around the clutch plate in the Torque Converter and over time starts to slip as exactly one of the other guys mentioned gets glazed up.
general rule of thumb for Trans Service is 80k km, with the Landy having the special Torque Converter setup i'd suggest doing the pan upgrade at around 60k or even 50k if your towing lots.
Dropping the pan and replacing the little oil that comes out isn't good enough, I have a guy here in Radelaide that has a machine connect to the Oil cooler, as the old oil comes to the cooler it is directed into an empty drum and a new 20lt drum of fresh oil is pumped back in at the same flow rate. This is done after a detergent flush has been performed to remove any excess muck that has accumulated around the gearbox.
i have heard, but don't know for sure, that just dropping the pan and replacing the couple litre's of oil that comes out can make the issue worse sooner.
