hey guys first post over here...i have found some useful info here over the past couple years and appreciate the help. got my traxide dual battery setup from you guys and love it.
i am in the US with a 2005 LR3 V8 with 18" rims. i run a 2.5" suspension lift full time and 285/60/18 cooper zeons. i like the zeons, but am wanting a set of mud terrains. however, i am wary of going up to 275/65/18 tires as i don't want to have to deal with a suspension fault in the middle of nowhere and have too big tires.
i have seen multiple pics of aussie D3's and RRS's with 17" wheels on them and am assuming that they are all V6's with smaller brake calipers. have any of you figured out a way to get a 17" rim on the V8 spec trucks? i am pretty sure i already know the answer to this question, but thought i'd ask. by the way, i love these steel wheels on this V6 spec RRS.

Sorry, but the V8s have larger front rotors - so the 17" wheels will not clear them.
If your state allows larger tyres, go that route. Note that at a certain size larger (maybe 275/65R18 up?) - they will start rubbing the inner guards on full lock.

Did your vehicle come standard with the 18" rims? If so, the 17's may fit. Over here the high power D4's / RRS's come with 19" rims (or larger) and the standard 18" rims will not fit over the front calipers. Vehicles supplied with 18" rims are able to fit 17" rims. Check to see if you have the large Brembo brake calipers - if so, it would be interesting to know what 18" rims you have.
Is your suspension lift for air or coil suspension?

I too suspect that if you have factory 18"wheels with a V8 then 17's will fit.
If the 17's do fit quite a few of us have bought 17" factory rims from Ebay in the UK.
This then opens up a much greater tyre choice i.e. 265 x 70 x 17.
One of the guys on the forum that work at LR may be able to ell you if the 17's will fit on USA V8's.

Hi cbboard - from memory the only time I recall anyone fitting a 17 inch rim to an American LR3 was when the owner did a bit of salubrious grinding of the calipers. This probably did nothing to endear him to his/her insurance company but...
Some manufacturers might have designed a 17 inch (nonOEM) rim that has the necessary clearance (also check load rating) but it wasn't intended that the original 17 inch rim is used with the larger disks that the V8s have in the NA market.
If you did want to find out more there was a bit written up on DISCO3.CO.UK but I just searched and can't find it.

thanks for the info guys! i figure i am out of luck in finding a way to fit a 17" wheel on the V8 spec LR3. i am really wanting a mud terrain tire but am not wanting to have to run the suspension lift full time just to clear the tires (ie 275/65/18). the thought of having a suspension fault, dropping to the bump stops, and not being able to clear the bigger tires in the middle of the boonies freaks me out a bit.

The "V8 Petrol" spec in D3 & RRS will not allow the fitment of 17's, the brake calipers will not allow the 17's to fit over them.

Are 18" rims an option for the V8 petrol or does cbboard have another aftermarket option?

i've got black powdercoated factory LR 18's currently on. yeah, i figured that the LR OEM 17" wheels from the V6 wouldn't fit. i am hoping somewhere out there is an aftermarket 17" that will clear the calipers and be strong enough to support the LR3's heavy rear end....wishful thinking.

On thing to be aware of is that most D3's (or LR3's) in Aust have the 2.7 litre diesel, which has smaller brake callipers, and therefore allows for the smaller 17" rims. In the US you don't get that engine option (Texas is where I am this month). I now have the D4 with a 3 litre diesel, which comes standard with 19" wheels and can only get custom made, (and therefore expensive) 18" wheels. While we drive on jagged limestone, or deserts with ultra-hard tree roots, which are perfectly designed to puncture sidewalls, I find that the 19" MTRs are surprisingly good. Instead of extra lift (presumably you and I have gone the route of shortened sensor arms to do this) from the bigger tires, you might want to get all the protective plates/sliders you can on the underneath. The vehicle will go okay in a lot of pretty extreme places with no lift and the plates/sliders and good tires.
PS: Is your photo Canyonlands National Park - possibly around Elephant Hill? I spent a lot of time there 45 years ago (in a Willy's Jeep) discovering some of the routes with my father. Ancient history now.
