Hey there Craig,
This is not an unusual occurrence and also yet another reason I don't like some keyless systems.
Don't know how long your dad was in the car waiting but typically after about three minutes of no other activity i.e. no engine start or maybe even accessory usage, the system will re-lock the doors.
This is a security feature. The system guesses (incorrectly) that you opened a door accidentally and since you haven't driven away yet it better lock up again before someone pilfers something.
I always figured it can't be too hard to use the SRS seat sensor to figure there's actually someone in the vehicle in this circumstance but, hey, what would I know
Anyway what harm can there be if they lock someone in, that person just reaches for the door handle and opens up the door again.
Your concern about locking a remote in the car has merit. Although the most common way to do this is to leave with the remote/key in the ignition and most systems warn you about that when you open a door.
Anyway, this is all just theory on my part but given that most remote locking systems tend to work this way I figure it's a reasonable guess.
Cheers,
Iain
