    Help! Broken Auto Gear Lever

    Help!!

I removed my centre console (around the gear knob) and in the process have seemed to have damaged the gear knob.

I needed to remove it, and so twisted it anti clockwise and then heard maybe something snap.

Now I can't 'pull the trigger' to operate the gearbox.

    Any ideas anyone?

How do I remove the knob? I read somewhere sticking it in drive and pulling upwards, but mine feels like it is held in place. It moves a little and then there's resistance.

    Cheers

I removed mine by pulling straight up.
Needs a fair amount of force but pushed straight back into place and remains fully functional.

I don't think the twisting was a good idea

How much force does it need?

Mine moves about an inch and then feels stuck, almost like it is attached to a cable or something.

    Cheers

OK.......I tried to pull the blimmin thing off but it still feels like it's attached to a cable or something. Also, I'm not sure if it is pulling off right. The knob looks like it is coming off the shaft, rather than leaving it behind (so to speak).

Could someone do me a huge favour and pull theirs off and take a picture, please, so I can see what the blimmin heck is supposed to happen.

(It doen't look like it is coming adrift as indicated in the drawing posted earlier).

After trying to pull the knob up a few times the trigger has now 'locked' in the on position so the gear lever will move. Phew!!

I'm really annoyed with myself, as I was prepping the Disco for a big trip next week and I was just tidying up/modifying some additional wiring that had been installed by the previous owner.

Looks like I'll have to hand over some of the holiday money to the dealer.

    Any input greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for this, much appreciated.

My knob pulls up about an inch (yeah, yeah) and so I can't see the white bit.

What is the white shaft thingy. Is it plastic? How long is it. (Any chance of a pic of that?)

Looks like I could have broken this when I twisted the knob anti clockwise thinking it was a screw fit.

Now.......how do I get it off?

The white bit is about 100mm long by memory.

I've been pulling pretty hard. It gives and moves up about an inch, then stops. The inch movement is easy.

It feels like it's attached to a cable, as it feels 'springy' and I can also feel the trigger tightening.

Obviously I've knackered something somewhere, when I twisted it. I been trying to see if I can take the knob apart, but no luck so far.

What's on the end of the white thing? Does it look like it engages something, like a slot for example?
