    The Best Tow Car

    from the Net--

Land Rover Celebrates Double Awards Success For Discovery 4

GAYDON, UNITED KINGDOM – June 16, 2011: The awards keep coming for Land Rover's impressive Discovery 4, with new honours announced on the same day for its performance as a towcar and for the anti-theft protection provided on the Discovery 4 Commercial.
For the second year running, the Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 XS has been named the winner of the 1900kg-plus category in the UK's 2011 Towcar Awards, organised jointly by Practical Caravan and What Car? magazines and the Camping and Caravanning Club.
The awards are the acknowledged benchmark for towcar performance, and the 1900kg-plus category once again recognises Discovery 4's peerless capabilities. In rigorous tests, it outperformed rival contenders that included the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz ML and Volkswagen Touareg.
Nigel Donnelly, Practical Caravan editor, said: "Last year's overall champion easily retains its class crown, it's going to take a really exceptional car to beat it.
"The Land Rover Discovery 4 is a tremendous car to tow with. Its high-speed stability is the equal of any car– line the outfit up on a straight road and you could almost drive it blindfold. If you have the means, the Discovery remains an exceptionally good towcar."
Land Rover received its award at a presentation ceremony held at Woburn in Bedfordshire, UK, on 15 June.
Another award followed, this time from the UK insurance industry. The 2011 British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards (BIVSA) judged the Discovery 4 Commercial to offer the best standard security package among 4x4 vans in the UK new vehicle market.
The Discovery 4 took top spot in a hard-fought category, judged on design and features that protect against both theft of the vehicle and the theft of items from it. Key elements in the Discovery 4 Commercial that helped secure it the top ranking include excellent body security measures and effective vehicle identification features.
Colin Green, managing director of Land Rover UK, said: "These latest awards further confirm the breadth of Discovery 4's market-leading performance, as judged by independent experts. We are confident that our customers will be even more assured that they are making the right choice thanks to these and the many other honours that the Discovery 4 has received."

How the hell do you tow a caravan with only around 1 foot of ground clearance like the van in that photo?

Imagine trying to get in or out of the average petrol station in Australia without ripping its arse off. No wonder the Poms fit their tow balls so low to the ground.

    cheers,
    Terry

Their roads and infrastrusture are much better than ours - they don't need a 4x4 and off road van to get into a fuel outlet, or over the driveway of the local shopping center..... a lot of vans are towed with small hatchbacks.

    Yes,, it is different there.
I recall in the seventies, I was driving a Mini about on my way down to Portsmouth to see the Victory and recall seeing a sign, "No petrol for six miles." The Mini was quite low - could have inspected the underside of a D3 from the drivers seat I recall, and yes, did not require a locking rear end to get into the petrol station either.

Yeah sure their roads are better then ours but that shouldn't be that hard for any western government to afford when you have over 60,000,000 people in an area that is much smaller then our smallest State Victoria. It all comes down to economy of scale.

Personally I'm happy to have poor roads even with high kerbs to get in and out of petrol station driveways as long as I can go camping in the great and massive Aussie bush. If I only needed a caravan with one foot of ground clearance then I would rather not bother.

Yes, I like having the problems of whether a Euro beam that only sees ahead a mile is adequate and that an 85 litre gas tank is only enough for a morning run.

Western and Northern Canada have realities similar to Oz. You have Skippy, we have Bambi. You have hot, we have cold; sand vs snow and the list goes on.

One needs the caravan or a tent, as the alternative is under the stars - a million of them, not five. Any petrol station that has not run out is a good petrol station and one does not complain about the track in, just happy there is one.

It has been years now, but I did once gas up from one of those glass topped "pumps". They were good in that they did not need a working generator to get the petrol up into the glass.

    Discovery 4 Commercial

    What is a "Discovery 4 Commercial " ?

As in, does it have a different body?

    Cheers,

    Kev.

I know, from experience, that in Hong Kong, they do not like diesel passenger cars, so you are unable to buy a TD Range Rover for example. However, they have configured the Discovery range to be a commercial 'Work Horse', as it can carry more than the RR, and therefore this now allows diesels into the market.
The ones that I have seen, have the five doors, same as ours, but a cargo barrier is installed at 'C' pillar, and the rear side windows are blanked off with metal sheets on the inside. At least, that's how I perceived it.
    Regards, Don.

In Ireland ( where they first came into existance) and the UK, commercial versions exist because of tax exemptions!

    Cheers
