    coolant for d3 V8 what type used

    Hi all

    Would like to know which type of coolant is used in d3 V8 engine the green stuff or the red (oat) type

    Alas, the manual I had for my old D3 V8 disappeared when the vehicle was torched. I do recall that the metallurgy of the V8 is very specific and there is only one specific brand to use and it was only available at the dealer. Being an alloy engine getting the coolant right is very critical the the engine's life. If you level is a litre or so low, it is okay to add a bit of DISTILLED water instead. The concentration of coolant normally in the engine is high enough to not only to protect against corrosion and to raise the boiling temperature, but also to survive Canadian -45C temps. Diluting the coolant slightly will still provide corrosion protection, high temperature protection and maybe -30C freeze protection. When next at a dealers ask for a jug of coolant to keep for the next needed top-up.

    I am also of a firm belief that coolants should be flushed and changed every 2-3 years, as it is can only help the internal health of the engine. For most of the natural gas fields I work with, we change piston engine coolant about 2 times as often as the manufacturer recommends for the cheap insurance. I wouldn't do the coolant flush and change myself as overhead cams and particularly the diesel engines have a very specific air purge procedure. If the coolant is drained and the tank topped up until its level stays constant, an air block in the upper part of the engine would prevent coolant from flowing there resulting in a very nasty seizure of something expensive.

    Texaco XLC, red in colour.

    The manual for my LR3 with the 4.4 litre V8 gasoline says Texaco XLC, one part antifreeze to one part water for protection to -33F, (-36C).

    The XLC per the pdf attached is Red in colour and claims to be a heavy duty diesel engine coolant.

    Also attached is a Chevron Havoline XLC brochure where the colour is Orange. Chevron owns Texaco now - note the Texaco and Caltex star at the top of the brochure so ....

    Also there is the Texaco Havoline brochure - Orange is the colour.

    Hence the answer is not so clear - well if it is clear, it is probably water.

    As bbyer has said,
    Texaco XLC, if you just want to top up the coolant, then just add water.
    If you are needing to flush or you have lost coolant substantially then the stuff can be purchased at a dealer in retail quantities.

    thanks guys have just purchased a d3 hse v8 and am not sure whats in it although it is red oat might have to dump the lot and refill so I don't mix different types , I use nylon red oat in my td5 has anyone had problems with this in a d3. thanks again for the info

    What is Nylon Red Oat? That is a name I am not familiar with.
