    OBD-II Reader / Scanner?

    I am trying to setup an OBD-II scanner reader on a 2010 D4 HSE 3.0TDV6. The setup is an OBDlink Bluetooth scanner from Scantool (http://www.scantool.net/) and then the Torque application on an Android phone (Torque — OBD2 Performance and Diagnostics for your Vehicle). I am aware that this will not read all systems, I am OK with that.


    I have used this in a Passat and all works well.


    When I plug it into the OBD-II port on the D4 all hell breaks loose. I get many fault messages. This settled down and I was able to read a fault code that indicated a CANBUS error which explains why so many errors as various systems couldn’t talk to each other anymore. However when the reader is plugged in I now end up with the error messags so I have removed it from the car.


    So some questions:


    1) Is the D4 OBD-II compliant? I cannot find any reference to it in handbooks or any compliance stickers in the car so I am suspecting not. However I though all vehicles produced in Europe would have to be OBD-II compliant?


    2) Has anyone successfully connected a similar OBD-II reader to a D4 TDV3.0? I am aware of the professional, vehicle specific readers such as Faultmate but I am asking about more generic OBD-II readers.

    3) Can I cause any damage to the vehicle by trying to connect this reader?

    Hi Peter,

    The CAN-BUS protocol has been around for a long time and the parameters are very tightly defined.

    Land Rover may have deviated, but I would be very surprised. Is there a possibility that your interface unit has developed a problem since the Passat days? If it is not getting power it could possibly load down the CAN-BUS lines.

    I have used an OBD2 Bluetooth adapter on my MY10 D4 3.0 SE to talk to the Android Torque App (as recently as last week).

    Absolutely no problems at all.

    CANSF mode for LR3

    Most of these OBD scanners can automatically self determine what is called Mode, that is the particular type of ECU electronic language that the OBD unit is told to understand.

    For my ScanGauge II, my 2005 LR3 with the 4.4L petrol V8 uses the Ford mode called CANSF. VW probably uses a different language and I suspect your scanner is locked into the VW mode.

    I discovered all this by playing around with the manual mode selection on my ScanGauge and not only did I light up all the trouble lights on the dash, I set the 3 down onto the stops - it was not pretty.

    Fortunately, disconnecting the ScanGauge and restarting the 3 resolved all. Below is from my ScanGauge manual. I note that the ScanGauge is not sold as an OBD reader but it does some of that. I suspect that the unit you have does have a manual as well as automatic reset of mode.

    FORD Products: PWM or CANSF
    GM Products: VPW , ISO or CANSF
    Chrysler Products: ISO, VPW or CANSF
    Volvo Products: ISO, CANSF or CANLF
    Others: ISO, KWPS, KWPF, CANSF, CANLF, CANSS or CANLS

    As said it'll be a mode error. Most scanners can self calibrate but sometimes you have to force the mode. I have a scan gauge which will self program on everything I've tried except Nissan. Guess what our second car is? It really has to be forced too. Set, then disconnect and repower up, and check again.

    waking the dead..

    has anyone used an iOBD2 mini bluetooth dongle? i bought one but i fail and bluetooth. cant get it to pair with either of my android phones. now bought an ELM327 clone as they seem the go for most vehicles, i also want to use it with TUNEECU software for my street triple R.

    wondering if the device is faulty, is me? or ??? something else

    In case someone needs it in the future the protocol is ISO 15765-4 CAN(11bit 500k baud)
