Dunno if it helps anyone but the D3 starting to slowly lose power in the normal load up spots on the regular work trip and then started to really blow some black soot under load and then under even slight load... take offs etc. The slow power loss was over about three weeks (perceived or real ? was the thought) and then the soot started to get real serious for a week.

Quick lift of the hood (finally) and a nicely multi split turbo hose... the big black one at the front. Swapped out now and smooth sailing... and no smoke!
