Help with gearbox oil filter change

I have started changing the oil and filter in my gearbox. Drained the oil, removed the pan (dislocated my arm the other day, so it was a bit awkward) and pulled out the old filter.

Now, the new filter has a seal at the top but it looks like when I removed the old filter the seal on that one was left behind.

I've tentatively had a go at removing the old seal from the filter housing within the gearbox so I can fit the new filter with its seal, but it looks stuck fast.

I've had a go at removing the new seal on the new filter, but predictably that is stuck fast.

Anyone had this problem? I'm thinking of removing the seal from the new filter and leaving the old one in place.

    Any tips appreciated.

(Pics are of new filter with seal and a pic of the old seal in the filter housing in the gearbox)

(Only uploaded pic of new filter as upload taking an age. Will try other pic later)

Called AB Automatics, where I got the oil, gasket and filter from. Great guys and service!

It seems that sometimes the old seal stays behind in the gearbox housing and it's easier to remove the new one from the new filter, as there is a risk of damaging something whilst poking around trying to remove the old one from the gearbox. Prising the new one off is quite challenging as well.

Anyways, removed seal from new filter and installed it without too much drama.

AB Automatics also advised filling the gearbox with the engine on and in drive to ensure a proper fill.

Can't speak more highly of these guys.

For reference I used about 5 litres of oil whilst doing this job.

In that case you have only changed about 60% of the entire amount of oil in the system (9litres).

You need to mega flush to get the most out of the oil change.

24000 klms on a new gearbox. A bit early, I know, but I want to get in the habit of doing this every 2 years. Oil and filter this time. Just an oil change next time.

A little bit of 'sludge' on the magnets, but nothing to worry about. Oil was in pretty good nick, darker than the new stuff, but not black. To be expected with the lack of Klms. Have to say, the box seems a little smoother and not as clunky as it sometimes is, but I didn't do the oil change for slip/clunky reasons.

Not too concerned with the mega flush, just freshening up the oil twas my plan.

Good idea - if that is what you intend maybe you should have put the metal sump in so the filter can more easily be changed. I am going to do a basic oil change every 24000km and a mega flush at 90,000km.

    Cheers

    Tin sump is already fitted.

Still a pain in the chesticles to change the filter, though!

Sounds like you are right on top of everything - except for the filter seal .

    Cheers
