    Smoky D4?

I pulled up behind a D4 in the city. (3.0 diesel).

When it pulled away from the lights it emitted a puff of black smoke (well 2 puffs), then when it accelerated up a hill there was a huge cloud of white smoke emitted.

Do they have a DPF fitted? Surely a DPF clean wouldn't be initiated while driving in stop-start traffic in cold weather?

    I've seen a few puff smoke...quite badly.

The D4 does have a DPF, not sure when or how it operates though. I got a warning light after being stuck for a period of time, in really heavy, post accident traffic. I was close to constant idle (rpm) with little movement but it went away after I got rolling again. Checked the handbook and that was as advertised.....get the system really hot whilst driving above a set speed and it will deal with the issue. I don't know how it works....maybe his was full after lots of city or short duration driving. Mine hasn't re-occured in two years.

I've also heard that these symptoms can be indicative of a dodgy turbo, as has been well advertised there was a run of leaky ones. Some leak internally (causing smoke and rough idling), some leak externally causing nothing but a pain in the ass, a loan car and a free car wash...LOL

    Cheers,

    Kev.

I think there is a fix for this issue now. Check the Uk forum.

All of the 1st batch of 3.0s had DPFs. I specifically requested no DPF so had to re-order once production changed to the DPF fitment being optional.

So if a DPF option is fitted to a D4 & clean procedure is initiated while driving at 80kph+ then you get a big cloud of smoke behind the vehicle.

    DPF

Can somebody please explain this to me?

I assume that the DPF is fitted as part of the emission control system, to enable the vehicle to meet regulations.

How then can it be 'optioned' off or removed on later models?

Also what are the pros and cons of a DPF......why would you want it removed?

    Cheers,

    Kev.

It is a requirement in Europe but not here. Probably put on here as a selling point but was deleted when they realised it wasn't and could save money reoving it?
Can't see any advantage having one uless you were of a particularly green bent.

Both AU and EU had the same (Euro 4) specs when the D3 was released AFAIK. Many manufacturers managed to meet Euro 4 without fitting a DPF. However when Euro 5 comes around, there will be no getting around a DPF.
