Neil,
Why not go back to the UK then to escape the gougers? I was there recently for an extended visit and found the natives to be most conivial and did not find one whingeing pom till encountering one at the arrival Immigration desk in Australia!

saving . Husky 338EXT chainsaw , USD407plus 8.25% sale tax plus USD120 USPS Prio. Here I was asked for Aus$1220 ! What a joke !
Got a pair of ejector springs for the PerazziMX8 from Italy ; 48Euro plus
6Euro post . Here, Aus120 EACH ! This country is riddled with gougers.

Neil, my point is not the cost of products available overseas, that is a given fact that Australia has a miniscule market compared to other countries, USA 300 million potentential customers, Australia 20 million, it's like comparing Woolworths to a corner shop. My beef with importing goods is shipping so ridiculously high.
I was going to buy an alternator for my 94 Disco @ $158 AUD but the freight was $150 , so I bought one here in Australia from Karcraft for $305, $3 cheaper and provided work for an Australian. So you can't blame it on gouging, look at ARB an Australian owned company producing 4wd parts and accessories. They sell thier parts and accessories made here cheaper in the USA. Because they would sell more gear in the USA in a month than they sell here at home in a year, it's the way things are, Regards Frank.
Price has nothing to do with market size , but competition does.
Before the EU ( starting with the Treaty of Rome ) , the UK was a rip-off
, but that's been stopped by free flow of goods. As for ARB's US prices ,
they have competition from many over there, They'll wear the freight
and middle costs that they won't for us because they don't have to.
Keep with US freight; UK and Canada are as bad as here. I save a ****load
form US suppliers
And Swampy , what has you comment got to do with prices of imported product here?
I agree on the US freight front. I had stuff shipped from the UK a few weeks ago, and was surprised how much freight had gone up since early last year when I was having loads of stuff sent over.
I had 2 HD Bilstein shocks sent over from the US for SWMBO's Merc ML.
$100 each for the shocks, and then $100 for FEDEX priority air freight.
Cheapest I could find locally was $150 a piece for no-brand shocks, and then $70 delivery from Melbourne.
