Factory roof rails

When I bought my D4 late last year the dealer said that he gave me a bargain by giving me the rails off another car in the yard for half price ($650). I have Thule cross bars for my roof top tent and when I bought the fitting kit from ARB to fit the LR rails they didn't fit.

After much mucking around the Thule rep finally said that the rails are probably Rhino. We then got the fitting kit for the Rhino rails and sure enough, no problem. Rang the dealer in Parramatta and he was certain that they were LR roof rails! Anyway, at least the price matches the Rhino cost in one of the posts above.

Have you had any issues with the weight of the tent and people on the roof?

I have an ARB Roof Top Tent and a fox wing but the whole max roof load thing is an issue for me.

I also think that it's a pity the rails have a curve in them front to rear.
It would be good if more support points could be used for what ever rack / basket is fixed to them. Being curved stuffs that option. :(

Mowog, I have had no problem with weight. I think the maximum weight is a dynamic one as is stated in many 4WD publications for generic cars and you just need to limit the weight while travelling to the specified maximum. In my case I have a Kimberley Mycube and this weighs just over 40kg with my options.

I am more concerned about exceeding the GVM of the car with bars front and rear, long range fuel tanks etc plus the roof top camper and camping gear.

Try adding 3500kg of van to back with LR Tank rear bar and some gear... GVM is a BIG issue for us.

I am looking for a lighter alternative for some trips. We have the Roof top tent and a fox wing but no roof rails on the D4... All this gear we got for my Sons Ford Ranger. But I am thinking it would be good for some trips to more remote places where you cant pull 3500kg of van.

I tow a 1800kg Geist, which is a perfect fit for the Disco and any other Euro tow car. The ball weight is 100kg maximum allowed so it doesn't even reduce the GVM of the car (I think 150kg is allowed at full load) and load leveller bars are not allowed on either the Geist or the car. It has the Euro over ride brakes, which are simply brilliant and much better than any electric brake system I have used previously. Towing with my old 6.5 Chev GQ (Maveric) was a bit of a struggle on hills but it is so effortless with the D4.

I think this has been asked before but, has anyone ever dropped onto a weighbridge with a fully kitted D3 or D4 ? One with front bar, winch, roofrack & tent, longrange tank, rear bumper & wheel carriers, internal fridge and all the stuff people carry. Just curious that's all, am thinking this must be heading towards or over 3 tonnes. I know the suspension self levels, but the additional load on the dampers etc must be enormous.

Like someone else said,the pop rivet is off puting.As the foxwing is long,the bars would probably have to be as far apart as possible on the raised section of the roof?So the pop will be needed.I will have to get it out & check it against the D4.Unless i get long rails & have one bar with longer legs,but don't think rhino make one.

I don't want a rack,just bars.

The rhino bars will fit the factory rails i think?

Sneigy,the foxwing is a good bit of kit,had it on the D2.

But there are a couple of issues,be VERY careful in windy weather,we broke ours once as the wind got hold of it while putting it up.Luckily the parts are easily sourced from Autobarn,which is great.I won't leave it up on a windy night in case the pegs & guy ropes work their way loose during the night.The largest sand pegs available are needed,and ALWAYS use the guy ropes,even if it is not very windy.

They are well built (and expensive)& mine had no worries on a Cape trip(lots of corrugations)They are also reasonably quick & easy to put up.

The other pain,as with any awning is it has to be packed up if you need to move the car.

My son has a 3mx3m gazebo which is another option.It has walls that velcro onto which ever side you want to put them on which is handy.
Being freestanding is also good.They are also a lot cheaper than a foxwing.
