    One more question disco4pilot...

Have you used the Bluetooth streaming on an apple product yet? I'm interested to see if it works. I have both an iPhone 4S & iPod touch in the car at the moment.

    Cheers Rob..

    Installation

Ok, so this might not be world best practice or even the way the manufacturer intended this to be installed but it’s the way I did it and it seemed to work.

You will need a Philips head screw driver and a torx screw driver (this is the star shaped bit. I think it was a T20 but I can’t remember as I had all of them in my toolbox) you will also need a lever of some kind. I used a large flat head screw driver and a small paint scraper covered in cloth.

The instructions that came with my device were in Chinese and they emailed me a (bad) English translation and a video of the dash being taken apart. Don’t let the non-professional looking instructions put you off the Chinese character instructions and user manual is quite well done and looks professional. Shame I can’t read any of it J. Now the video shows the whole stereo and aircon unit being removed which was not required so ignore the video when it goes past removing the screen it just gives you an idea on removing the trim. Here is a link to the video.

I’ll post a copy of the instructions but they are not particularly clear. Especially the bit about the AUX plug (more on that later).

    image host

    Lets get started.

I’ll give you a rundown of what you need to do before going into detail. Basically the screen is the main component and has all the plugs. It is all pre wired and mostly plug and play. There is a loom that goes from the screen to the DVD player a loom for all the AV Ins and outs that also connects to the AUX wiring that is under the cup holder (hard wired to the plug in the back of the arm rest) and a loom that plugs directly into the loom you unplug from the old screen. All the wires were marked in English with what they were for except for two, which I discovered, are not used so don’t worry about them! One is green and the other is orange. Below is a photo of the back of the screen with the wires connected. You can see a long green wire which can be connected to the brake somewhere to blank the screen when moving (I didn’t bother) you can connect this if you want (I don’t know where) and still turn this feature off in the settings. It works fine if you just leave it. You can also see the orange and green wires I asked what these are for and she said they are not needed so I tapped them up and everything was fine. At the end of the long DVD loom you will see two connectors one is an RCA socket and the other is a screw terminal. The screw terminal says something like “connect to host shell”. This is a negative. Once you remove the top glove box you will see a few torx screws that this will fit on. The other connector goes to a wiring loom under the cup holder. Included is a RCA plug with wires on the end. This is the only part of the install where you have to change the factory wiring, you basically have to tap into the AUX plug and then put a little plastic plug in the 3.5mm socket to fool the car into thinking something is plugged in. There is also a mic connector and a GPS connector. All pretty much self explanatory.

I found it easier to use the following guide to remove the trim and screen. This is how to remove a high spec screen but it is the same. http://www.bellautoservices.co.uk/pu...ce-Install.pdf

You should note that the instructions that came with the unit do not show the trim around the gear lever being removed I found however that I DID need to remove this trim in order to run the RCA wires to the AUX socket and to run RCA cables for the video out for rear screens when funds allow. It also makes it much easier to connect the AUX wires. It looks tricky but is one of the easiest bits to remove. The only clarification I’ll make to the above posted instructions is that you will most likely loose some of the little metal trim clips when you remove the trim. They can be easily replaced next time you are at your dealer. I lost a few and in the end decided to remove them from the glove box as I think it was secure enough and use those clips on the important trim. You need to use quite a bit of force to remove the trip in places.
    Clips

Once you have removed the screen you can start removing the glove box. This just pulls out with the same clips as used on the rest of the trim. I also removed the air vent trim on either side of the car. These just pull out from the bottom. I did this to run the GPS to the left and the Bluetooth mic to the right. Once you’ve got the glove box out get the DVD player and its mount and decide how you want to mount it. You’ll need to cut a small hole in the box to fit the wiring loom through and drill some holes in the top for the mount. Behind the glove box you should see a couple of silver Torx screw s. One looks like it is holding up less weight than the others so I used this one as my earth point for the black cable labelled “Connect to host shell”.

Now run the RCA cable that is labelled AUX to the left of where the screen was down to the white plug that is under where the cup holders were. You should be able to easily find a way through. You can see why you had to remove the trim. You have to tap into the loom. I recommend doing this on the AUX plug side of the white connector rather than the car side so if you stuff it up you can easily get a new loom. Or if you want to take the car back to 100% factory one day. I stripped the wire and soldered and taped the join however you can get push down plugs that do the same thing if soldering in you car fills you with dread (Jaycar or Disk Smiths). The white cord goes to the blue one the red to the red and the black to the black. There are three blacks but the one you want is next to the blue and red. I suggest plugging a cord into the 3.5mm AUX plug and using a multimeter to make sure you have the correct wires and that you have done this correctly. Now plug the little black plug into the 3.5mm socket. The photo shows the gear lever trim still in place but I ended up having to remove it and it made it much easier.

With both the MIC and the DVD I’ve written it as running from the screen to the position but you should start from the position to the screen so that all the excess cable is taped up behind the dash.

I ran the MIC for the Bluetooth to the right of the screen behind the steering wheel and past the vent. I just used a long screw driver to pass it behind the wheel and used cable ties and tape so that it couldn’t catch on anything. I then ran it up the A pillar on the side closest to the door. You just fold back the seal and it fits in behind.

    image upload

I ran the GPS between the Top and Bottom glove boxes all the way to the left side out between the dash and the A pillar and then along the bottom of the windscreen to the middle. You can push the cable down between the forward dash and the windscreen so it can’t be seem. The kit came with a black plate with a bunch of Chinese writing and GPS written on it. I found out that this is used to boost the GPS signal. I don’t think it will do anything so haven’t bothered. I’m not in the city much so GPS reception isn’t much of an issue for me.

    image upload

I thought it might be neater to have the GPS under that grill you can see in the photo but could not find a way to run cables to it.

I also ran my reverse camera down to the sill whilst the vent panels were off. See the following for how to wire in the reverse camera.

    http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albu...stallation.pdf

You need to put the speaker somewhere. The speaker is used for voice commands from the satnav. I ended up putting it in the glovebox but if I did it again id probably run a longer wire and put it in the trim below the right vent but really its up to you. It’s not that important.

Now reinstall the glove box and plug the screen into the connector you removed from the old screen and plug in the RCA plugs you will use, ensure that the GPS and MIC plugs are connected and that everything is secure. There will be lots of excess cable but there is plenty of room behind the dash to hide this out of the way. Tape up all the RCA plugs and I suggest using electrical tape to tape everything up so that there is no chafing of annoying squeaks or rattles behind the dash. Before putting all the trim back on (with the exception of the gear lever trim other wise you’ll get a gear box fault) I tested everything at this point to make sure I had everything connected correctly before pushing the trim back on as I didn’t want to loose more metal plugs if I’d stuffed up anything. The trim has to go back in a certain order so you may need to pull up the gear lever trim again if you tested it in order to put some of the other trim on.

    Operation

Ok so the manual is in Chinese… it doesn’t really mater you should be able to figure it all out. The only things that had me confused were how to pair the phone. You actually go into the touch screen phone menu and set a pin that you would like to use. You then go to your device and connect using that pin. Also you may need to set the path for the GPS. If you hit Navigation and nothing happens go into settings/factory/ and set the path to your GPS program (igo8.exe or something). Also once you start the GPS program you may need to go into the program settings and set the GPS (man this took me along time to figure out!!!!) In Igo8 you go to the GPS settings page and you turn the GPS off and then press the auto button. It will then scan and find the GPS. If you have a different program you may have to use trial and error to find the correct port and rate.

Think I covered everything… clear as mud I’m sure.

A bonus though that the steering wheel phone buttons now work - they don't in my standard 3.0 SE.

Also, where/how can I or anyone else "assist" you for your efforts & excellent leadership here? Living in Sydney & with a new baby coming, it must be expensive. I said I'd like to help & I would. What you have done removes a lot of risk & question for all who are interested. Well done.

    Regards,

    Les.
Yes correct the Bluetooth only works with my wife phone using the phones buttons. As I said though I don't know for how long this will work as I don't know if repairing will be possible. Also my steering wheel buttons for the phone worked before (well two of them did) so I'm not sure about that...

As for the assistance, don't mention it. I enjoy this kind of stuff. That's what forums are for

Hey guys just an update. I connected a different phone via Bluetooth and it worked great (IPhone 4) No issues with sound quality. Even with the other phone (iPhone 4s) conversations were fine with no complaints from the other end. It just sounded a little tinny. Everything else works fantastically.

From starting the engine and putting in reverse to the reverse cam image being displayed is about 13 secs. If it is up and running already it is about 3 seconds.

    Cheers

    Thanks Pete for your updates.

Witht the bluetooth integration, does it:
    1) Copy the addressbook from your phone into the system?
    2) Allow smart dialling (where you click the letters of the person's name on the number pad) or selection from addressbook?

The thing that annoys me on the standard one is that with an addressbook of 700 entries it would take forever to scroll to the right entry to dial it.

    GPS
Yes I've used the GPS it works very well, you can run any Windows CE GPS program on a microSD. Igo8 is really good my favorite feature is you can put in a street name and then pick from a list of suburbs. Rather than having to put in the suburb first and then enter the street. Also it blanks out the letters if the available options do not include those letters so it makes entering things very easy. I don't know how it did it but it automatically changed to night time colors at dusk. It must have local night time stored in the maps. I found out a bit more on how these systems actually work. They actually have their own operating system running for all the functions except GPS which is run on a separate OS windows CE (Irrelevant to the discussion but interesting all the same this is why the GPS uses a separate speaker not the car speakers).

You do have to manually adjust the brightness on the display at night though. It is only a few buttons so not a big deal or you could just select a compromise between too bright at night and too dim during the day. Maybe one of the wires that I was told was not needed (as apposed to not used) does this when the lights are turned on. This is what my Chinese stereo did in the Patrol so this might be worth investigating. I have not found bright sun light to be an issue viewing the screen.

    Telephone
As for the Bluetooth it doesn't download your address book like the factory one does. You can manually put numbers in a built in address book. I don't know if you can then smart dial with these. I don't have to receive or make phone calls for work so I really don't have to use the phone functions much. For me it's just the wife and my mates so didn't take long to manually put in the built in address book. I also have a phone charger and cradle mounted on the dash (I think you can see it in some of the photos) I find it easier to just use this if I have to look up a number.
