Just looking at that photo, were the wheel nuts ever left loose for a period of time?
The stud holes look to be elongated in the photo
May have something to do with the failure
Morning fellow campers. Here is a couple of pics of a cracked Dynamic rim I just replaced.
I heard a clicking noise coming from the front of the car when I was turning and couldn't for the life of me work out what it was. Checked everything thinking it might be a CV on its way out but nothing wrong there.
Still perplexed I did my routine tyre rotation and the noise from the front disappeared. A couple days later I heard the noise again and couldn't quite get a location. Then my grandson said it sounded like it ws coming from the back. I had a look and again could spot anything. I probably should have washed the wheels first eh?
Driving the other day and a sudden shudder at about 80kph gave me cause for concern. I only had about 10k to go before I was home and did a quick walk around. Bugger me if didn't spot this straight away. Changed out for the spare and now I am down to 5 rims and 6 tyres.

Wheel nuts checked regularly and were never loose as far as I know. They were definitely tight when I removed them. May be due to the cracking and the resulting vibration.

I think the holes only look elongated because the metal is raised at the centres and drops away below and above the nut contact areas with a resultant shorter contact face.

Wow! That's scary.
Looks like another reason to steer clear of the Dynamic rims. In Vic. at least, they render the car unroadworthy due to rim offset. An accident deemed due to rim failure could void your insurance. Scary!!
Have you sent the photo's to the Dynamic distributor for comment. It'd be interesting to hear.
Glad I bought second hand set of 17" BB6's now. Baz was recently considering buying a new set of these rims, he might change his mind now.
Hey Mike if you still have the standard 18" rims that your D3 came with then I'd consider putting them back on especially given that your going to be towing a van which would put even greater stress on the Dynamic rims.
You won't see the OEM rims cracking I bet.

What is the weight rating of those dynamic rims?

1957 Series 1 88" Station Wagon
Still got them Terry and I've been giving that option real serious consideration. The only downside to them was the cost of tyres in that diameter. Although importing 6 tyres from the US is only $1800 compared to a smadge under $3600 here, I can still justify it. Given that I am now down to 5 rims of each now it is probably the better option. 5 tyres on rims and one on the roof rack along with a spare tyre for the van.
What are BB6s? I've not heard of them before.
