Thread: Mounting GME 3540/ICOM 440N in D4?

Hi Diana,
The other option from GME TX3540 (or TX3340), is the Icom IC440N - which has the advantage of having speaker and mic in the handset. So no need for external speaker.

If I were to install an external speaker for the GMEs, I would use the space where the centre speaker is usually located - as I don't have a high-line stereo.

Regarding the handset, I am about to order one of these:

Freight is the killer on these - maybe a group purchase is in order?

I looked at the ICOM 440N (yes I like ICOM) but didn't realise they had a speaker in the handset. (I have the hiICE audio so the speaker option is out)

I'd be in for a group buy on the brackets.

I thought only the premium ICE (logic 7) had the centre speaker?

I had the same game radio mounted in my D3 under the steering column removable panel so out of the way, I extended the handset to come out through the hole in the coin tray just forward of the gear shift. Just had to poke a small hole in the rubber liner to run the cord through. The handset and cord curled up neatly in the coin tray while not in use.

If you sold the car it's easily remove able

The answer may be beside you. The centre box has clearance for the unit beside the seat mounting rails and having the hand set right beside you on the top RHS allows you, front or rear passangers to access the mic. It is easy to get to and not really in sight at all. feet from the back cannot get to the unit at all.

Fits and works well in my D3 so may/should work in your D4.

I know it may not all that likely, but since drowning my RRc to over my feet when it was only about a year old I'm reluctant about mounting something like a radio at floor level, so I'd rather mount it a little above seat level and why the thought about behind the glovebox trim.

Does anyone know if there is any space or is it filled up with airbag stuff?

I have the 3340 version & i mounted mine under the drivers seat atop the amplifier.
I know you wish to mount the head unit elsewhere & as it is a small unit, you could probably mount it above the drivers kick panel (above the pedals so to speak) there is a fair amount of room there & you could velcro/double sided tape it to the tray. Or even make a bracket for it to sit on if you wish.

The only downside i could see is the speaker that is inbuit (i assume as i dont know the model you are looking at) in the head unit needs to be not tucked away somewhere as you not be able to hear it, mine is fine under the seat & i can hear it quite well. Just something you need to consider.

I would try not to mount anything behind the glove box for a couple of reasons, Firstly the CJB lives there(need access to this for fuses), & you also have a nice airbag in the dash.
