Smile 18" rims for Disco4 HSE

Gordon at GreenOval got us a set of 18" rims to replace our 19"s. They arrived in due course and we have fitted some BFG All terrains (265/65R18) also as recommended.
All of that bit is good and Greenoval were great to deal with but what I have not been able to find in these forum pages is a note warning users considering doing the same thing, that the new rim tyre package does not fit into the spare cavity.
Well...it does actually... if you remove the heat shield (easy, and still plenty of space between the tyre and exhaust), remove the tow neck and "air down" the tyre you want to put in as the spare.
Air down is double speak for letting all of the air out of it so that it is flat and malleable enough to be able to be "persuaded" (forced) in past the towing channel piece with a light hammer... or even a heavy one! And it's a two man job as the new tyre needs to be guided in while somone else is cranking the tyre up.
So now we carry our 12 volt aircompressor with us as our spare is flat! I don't really mind though and sort of thought that this might be the case. Gordon wasn't sure about a D4 but thought it might be an issue.
So, now I can tell you it is with this tyre wheel combination at least.
You can just imagine what the road and weather will be like when I in some time in the future need to change a flat!
Ride is just as good as with the standard "car" tyres, car is def taller and the tyres are a bit noisier. Very happy though and love not having to think about tyre issues any more.

    Good choice of tyres

Had mine fitted yesterday,as mine is 2.7 i went for 17's.Very slight increase in road noise, handles different, but no problem at all.

Had two sets of the BFG A/T on the D2,no flats at all, fantastic.I also looked at te rugged terrains, but they are not as strong as the A/T.

Oh & my spare fits where it belongs, full of air

Your speedo may be spot on now?Haven't checked mine yet,but should be similar to original, about 4k's less than actual.

Your 265/65/18's wont fit because they are larger diameter than standard.

255/60/18's will retain OEM rolling diameter and should fit in the spare bay.

Most threads/posts on this site that deal with oversize tyres normally do discuss the issue of fitting these tyres in the spare wheel well. Normally it to be stored flat is the solution and some others remove heat shields etc.

265/60/18 will also fit. ( A few more tyres are available in this size )

My 265/65/17 don't fit either But that's also my choice!

But the 265/60/18 is not available in LT,where the 265/65/18 is.
BFG have the rugged terrain in 265/60/18,but is not LT rated,if it was i would have got a set, instead of the mucking about getting 17's.

18" inch Rims for Disco 4

    Hi

Slightly off subject, but can somebody confirm / deny that BFG AT 265/65/17 tyres will fit standard LR 17 alloy rims(D3) for the D4 TDV6 2.7 without problems .

I am picking my new D4 up on Friday and have been assured by the Bob Jane store that they will fit and replace the standard 255/60/18's without problem (having replaced several sets already?).

I'm now concerned re the standard spare storage issue.

Can't wait to get the D4 being ex D1(V8i), D2(TD5) and current D1 (Tdi 300) and hook up our Trakmaster van.

    Cheers

    Mke,
I also run factory 17's on my D4, I run Mickey Thompson MTZ'S in 265/65/17, they all fit nicely, rub a little here & there (fixed with a Llams unit) but fit well into the wheel arches...
    BUT.....
The spare needs to be deflated to fit into it well.

    Cheers.

There is a lot of baggage associated with purchasing "LT" or "PT" tyres that is not as relevant these days as it used to be.

In several instances, the load rating of PT tyres of a particular manufacturer in a particular size, is greater than that of another manufacturer's LT tyre. And the material used in the sidewall construction can now be a greater consideration than the number of plies used. The buyer needs to be more aware these days, rather than relying on just the LT or PT classification.

    Cheers,

    Gordon
