Thread: Fitting a Mitch Hitch

Just curious-it looks to me that with the Kaymar and mitch hitch added it extends the eqivalent of the "towball" pivot point quite a bit further away from the back of the car (tailgate) than the standard bar/ towball? Or is it just the photos that make it look that way?

Could someone who has one fitted measure the distance from the back of the tailgate to the centre of the pivot point for me? Much appreciated..

I would have thought that it would be the same....there is no difference in the part.

Or do you mean the tongue needed extends out further ?

Just looking at the photos by Weird Al where he shows the hitch missing the tailgate when the tailgate is open.

Mine currently has the standard LR tongue and ball and the ball sits about 200mm??further back (hidden under the tailgate) when the tailgate is open.

The Mitch hitch sits back from the rear bar a few inches so it will put the hitch point back a bit. I haven't towed with it yet so I don't know if it has made a difference.

The change to a Mitch Hitch was all about removing failure points I never been comfortable with the Land Rover setup.

I have read and read about the landrover removeable tow hitch and for the life of me cant see that if all is done correctly how it is any less or more reliable than any other type of hitch . Must admit i did get the d4 hitch for my RRS as the plough was far to low for my camper . I have read about them falling out of the hitch reciever but i cant see how if it is put in correctly in the first place .

The 2 that I have heard of that fell out were due to a casting fault. I had my D4 checked for that.

I tow a a van that is at the limits of the D4 3500kg and 320kg on the ball. All that weight just adds to wear and tear on the multiple connections I need to get my van level. The Mitch hitch removes one wear point it also gets the hitch in a better spot for my van. I will also now be able to open my rear door.

The wheel latch couldn't be released when the van was attached moving the pin back a few inches has fixed that issue as well.

We're trying to get some interest together for a group buy on the Mitch Hitch here in the US. Can someone suggest a vendor that would likely work with us on a price and shipping to the US please.

I would contact Mitchell Bros direct. Aaron Mitchel is the guy you need to deal with. You could become the US distributor for them and get the onseller price?

When being developed the height blow the tailgate was cinsidered and it should clear easily even with a trag hitch at off road trailer height. Yet to see a set up that hasn't cleared. Anyone has problems?
