    Tool kits

    Hi guys,

    I would like to put together or buy a mechanics toolkit for 4wd trips for the disco.
    I have had a quick look online but not seen anything special. Prefer a canvas tool roll than a box or case.

    Anyone else managed to purchase something, or create something. Would the socket set/ spanners be imperial or metric?

    I suggest...

    combo 3/8+1/4 inch drive socket set covering 8-19mm (most do 10-19 and thats acceptable) in 3/8th and 4-13mm in 1/4 (most do 4-12mm) Good ones also come with the imperial equivalents. Kingchrome do a nice set and for introductory tools are worth the money, My kingchrome set is better than 10 years old and the most commonly used sockets are starting to fracture their chroming off so are due for replacement.

    A set of metric Ring open ended spanners 8-24mm I suggest sidchrome or equivelent for these

    a good pair of
    • Vice grips
    • needle nose pliers
    • slip joint pliers
    • Combination pliers

    • 10inch shifter
    • Combo Screwdriver
      • #1 flat tip
      • #2 flat tip
      • #1 phillips
      • #2 phillips
    • Allen/torqz bit set (metric)r
    • multi meter (only needs to be a reasonable, cheap item)



    Thats a get you started list....

    From there what you bulk that out with depends on how game you feel about your servicing.

    I carry a metrinch combo kit in my car for my spanner needs, they are good sets and I have abused one set for 18 years before scum stole it. The only draw back is they are pain in very tight spaces, but they will undo a badly rounded off nut/bolt, trade offs. The set i have is this one Metrinch-tools - IF THIS CAN'T DO IT, NO TOOL CAN and it needs a 12mm spanner added to it which I have done, it easily fits into the case.

    Other than that I always carry my leather man, cause I always need it when I don't have it. And Daves list covers things pretty well too.

    In the shed I like as much Stahlwille as I can afford, just love good tools!

    thats for diagnostics....

    Havent yet seen the computer diagnose a leaking gasket, coolant weep, loose wheel bearing, shot shocky rubber, torn wiper blade or bald tyre.

    tools are for repairing what the computer does or doesnt find.

    I'm also in the market for a tool roll kit, look into the king chrome kit I will. To answer the above, I keep my fault mate in the car at all times, I just don't always carry my toughbook with me to make adjustments, but it will clear all faults if needed.

    your right pop058ld be surprised what a reasonable scan gauge can inform you of , a long time before any tools are required. I reckon best bang for buck is a Android smart phone running The Torque Plus app through a Bluetooth connection .Remember we are talking D3/D4

    These are the tool rolls that I use. They're made by a NZ company, based in Christchurch. If you buy 2 they will be freight free. The exchange rate works relatively well in our favour at present too.

    There are also some alternatives on ebay. This and this or this. Or this.

    The other thing that stuffs easily into a tool roll is a selection of cable ties. And a roll or two of Rescue Tape.
