The led signature lights will come on when parking lights are selected (first position), or on full lights on. Auto will make all lights including LED signature lights when they are triggered. I think that they only come with the bixenons.
The DRL (additional LED lights) can bet set to come on with the ignition.....by wiring them that way in my case. I did try to setup the led signature lights with ignition on but got a lighting fault message on the MFD.

Does anyone know if the Daytime Runnning Lights in the MY12 D4 can be retrofitted to older D4s?

Given that there is a retro fit kit I reckon you can! Have a look on TOPIX I think it is in their somewhere from memory.

I was thinking about adding them:

Learn something new everyday.... didn't know that the MY2012 came with daytime running lights.

I would imagine they would be a bit prone to damage while off roading, don't you think?

AND at $600 drive with the parkers and fog lights on, heaps cheaper hey.
