Thread: Fuel economy 2.7 D3/4

My D4 2.7 gets 9.2 (7.5 to 8.0 indicated) on the highway.

And around town between 10.5 and 11.5.(9.0 to 10.0 indicated)

Although its a but hard to tell whats what with the long range tank now fitted, for example last time I filled the car it took 181.9L to cover 1862.1km, so 9.77L/100k.

Consisting of a trip to Sydney and back, a trip to Wagga and back and the rest driving about the nations capital.

This is with one person and bunch of work crap in the back, or two large and two small occupants.

Pretty good for a 2.5T brick shaped motor vehicle.

Perhaps your BFG's add a bit to the consumption, they added an extra L/100 to my previous car a Grand Cherokee.

We did 2800klms recently, heavily loaded, including a large brick on the roof, to stuff up what was left of the aerodynamics.

The vehicle readout gave us 11.4 litres per 100 klms, the fill to fill worked out at 11.5 litres per 100klms. That is pretty accurate.

I find the std tyres with the calibration as delivered, read hopelessly under. Almost 10% out at 100kmh. ( by GPS ) We ran 17"rims for the trip, and 275/65 muddies. The speedo is now pretty much spot on. Probably had a fair bit to do with the results achieved.

Usually ours gets about 12.5 l/100 for everyday driving, not as economical as others seam to get given that we live in the country with few traffic lights and no rush hour traffic.

Highway driving is very good however as far as I'm concerned with about 9.5 to 10.5 l/100 depending on how I drive.

I have 265/60/18's fitted so the speedo is pretty much accurate.

My D4 2.7 gets (says the trip computer) 10.4 around town and 8.4 on the highway. Adding the Rhino rack adds another 2.

Having nursed (for economy) the D3 V6 petrol around town for 5 years I still try to use a very light foot when accelerating.

Weird al,i thought about the BFG's,but had them on the D2 & it got fantastic fuel economy,actually a lot better than the D4.I had the OEM 18's on (the D4) for a while & fuel economy was the same as the BFG's.

Admiral,so as my tyres are same diameter as OEM,that is maybe why dash read out is also incorrect,as speedo is definitely reading faster than actual ,as per my GPS,around 5%.Dash readout of fuel usage is around 10% out at least.

Terry o,your highway fuel econ is way better than mine,and i don't go over 100k's & drive smoothly(i could get 8's out of the D2 TD5)

White D3,ever actually checked it against your dash readout,you may get a surprise.

Be good to get a few more replies,mine has only got 6000k's on the clock,maybe will improve a bit more hopefully.

I have. It reads ~ 0.5 to 1.0 l/100km low. 'bout the same error as the D3 I've found.

The problem in doing a real world comparison is not knowing how the carputer calculates the economy (time, distance travelled, etc). I've looked for but not found an explanation.

I have 3lt and have noticed varying economy with different fuel supplies.
BP Ultima much better.
For what its worth 9l\100km at home (countryish) and
13.2 l/100km towing a 2ton KK ( 5000km trip)

My 3.0's odometer was very accurate even though the speedo was about 5% optomistic due to the factory-set speedo fudge factors in the CCF prior to my changing them. Unless you have already taken account of it, your distance travelled with the larger tyres is likely to be low so your fuel consumption should be less than what you have calculated.
