    garmin gps

    Hi All,
I want to use a garmin gps in a range rover sport so I can access some topographical maps. It can pick up satellites ok out of the car but not in the car. The built in gps works fine. Any suggestions as to what is going on.

    What flavour Garmin?
I have a new garmin handheld with colour maps and am blown away with how good the satellite reception is.
It will reliably hold 6 sat reception in definitiely sitting in the centre console section of the defender - No line of site to anything!

My old garmin hand held needed to be on the dash or an external aerial to be reliable from within vehicle

Exact same experience with me. Old one used to lose satalite reception in tree cover or the among tall bulidings.

The vehicle may have an athermic windscreen which has a metallic film to reduce the amount of heat coming through the glass. Unfortunately it also reduces the GPS signals. See Athermic Windscreen for more info.

The inbuilt GPS has an external aerial...
As others say its just to do with how good the internal receiver is. Newer better.
