A lot of larger tyres will work with minimal rubbing down to access height - however as we know the D3 has a propensity to flop down onto the bump stops from time to time and many of these larger tyres will not then turn. So make sure they will still work down to the bump stops or get one of GOE airbag pump up mods to keep you up off the ground.

265/70 R18 equals 828mm diameter, so yes they will defintly rub!
Modifications would be required.
It will rub - badly! Even with shortened rods or LLAMS fitted.

Is the 265/65/R18 tyre size ok?
OD appears to be similar to the 265/70/R17 which seems to be in general use across most brands of tyres on 17" rims on the D3 and D4.
I would be particularly interested in any comment on the BFG LT 265/65/R18 which appears to be a substantial AT tyre with LT construction and a massive load rating.
I'd think so, it has an overall size of 801.7mm.
I run the Cooper LTZ 285/60 R18 and it is 799.2mm overall.
You would have some rubbing particularly the front of the rear wheel arch as there is a body seam which is behind the plastic inner guard. If you don't have rear AC you can trim it to give more clearance. If you have the rear AC you can move some pipework then trim the seam.
I just live with the occasional rubbing, Llams or Rods will help increase clearance.
The spare may fit but you will have to remove the heat shield and deflate the tyre to squeeze it in. Of course you then need a compressor to pump the spare up if you need to use it!
The Opposite Lock D3 at the Queanbeyan 4wd show back in Feb this year had General Grabber AT2 265/70 R 18s fitted and they certainly looked the goods - the OL guy said he could get to access height with out major rubbing but he said they had taken the hot air gun to the plastic rear inner wheel well shielding so they would not rub but otherwise no issues. The front inner guards had also taken a little damage but they were not screwed down and when driving the air flow would have pushed them back onto the tyre.

Im looking at replacement tyres soon for the d3 with 18".
I looked at the General grabber AT2 265/70/18 with 32" (813mm) size but they appear too big without modification, Im happy to install modified rods to get some more height to minimise risk bottoming out, but turning it would seem to need some work on the inner guards and alter the rear a/c pipes which seems no big deal to perform.
the other alternative is 265/65/18 which there is not as much choice, except BFG have the rugged terrain and all terrrain tyres available (31.5") or 800mm. These seem the same O.D. as the popular 265/70/17 size.
Is there any pics of landrover d3's running bigger tyres or do we all run he standard sizes?
EDIT:
Just found a very useful list.
LR3 Tire Size Chart
Looks like we can run up to 32.61" or 828mm with rods.
Sexytime...........but id like to confirm this as ordering too big tyres could be a very expensive mistake. Im happy to use rods, and shape/move the plastic and rear a/c lines but the last thing i want is the tyre being jammed when turning sharply when going off roading.
Rods are good or there is the Llams system which allows ride height adjustment at various heights on the fly.
Cheers,
Terry
