    D3 Brakes - Mount Isa

I'm looking for someone in or near Mt Isa to change out the brake pads on the Disco. We are traveling through there in the next few weeks and since the amber "Check Brake Pads" light is on I will have them changed out. I'll contact them in advance so they can order the parts in so they are there when we arrive.

Since we have no fixed address and are towing caravans I don't have everything I need, nor the facilities in case something goes wrong, to change them out myself.

Also looking for a recommendation for someone in the area to check out a few other minor issues and warnings that are coming up.

    Thanks in advance.

I used Kev's Automotive in Mt Isa for a service when I was coming back from the NT a couple of weeks ago.

They ordered the service parts from Townsville a couple of days ahead of me getting to Mt Isa. I provided the LR part numbers but I probably didn't need to. I had to pay for the parts before they ordered them but I thought that perfectly reasonable. Sent them a bank transfer.

I don't think they see too many Land Rovers but they did a competent grease and oil job on my Defender.

They don't accept credit cards. So it's cash or nothing.

They are at 6 Barnes Street, Mt Isa. Phone (07) 4743-5621.

If you do get in touch with them, please tell them that a guy passing through in a yellow Defender recommended them.

No matter what the problem - there's a solution. You've just got to find it.

    Gday...

I used this mob last year - just a normal service but they did a good job - good price too. Someone on here recommended them to me.

    Miners Mate Mechanical

From memory they do lots of service on the mine vehicles (albeit not LRs) .. and the head dude has a Disco I think.

If your amber light is on I don't think I would be waiting for a few weeks.

My light was not on and when I changed mine last week the rears were down to 2mm so yours will be less.

There is nothing special about the brakes so any competent brake person can do the job - you will need to get two new sensors.

Thanks Garry. The light was flashing on and off all the time while driving so I had it look ad at and they said I still had about 6000 on the front and 10,000 on the rear. Have only done about 1,000 since then and the light is now on permanent. We've delayed our departure as long as we can waiting for responses from places in Darwin to no avail and we must leave tomorrow. I'll tweak the power up on the van brakes to take some of the pressure off the Disco.

Why not get the brakes done before you leave or book in a town on the way - would take an expert about an hour to do - if the sensors are not available I would just leave them off and fix at the next service - tape them up and tie them up to the suspension in a safe spot.

I would not be going anywhere as it is, particularly when they are so easy to do.

Different matter though if the rotors are worn - min 17mm rear and 27mm fronts. This will obviously take a bit longer.

We are currently in Katherine, NT and the nearest place that would do them is Darwin, and they still haven't come back with a quote. They did say it would take 2 days to get the parts and we must leave today. We considered the downside but it is only 1300km to Mt Isa and we should make be able to make that.

Thanks everyone for the replies they have been very helpful.

You won't use the brakes much between Katherine and Mt Isa!
