    D4 18" AT Tyres

    Hi Guys

This is my first post. I have been reading with interest, past threads on the tyre options.

I have 18" Rims on the water from Gordon due next month. What I would like to know is first hand experience on different tyre options, I have gone the 18s to get more side wall and would ideally like to have light truck (understanding recent commentary there is apparently little difference these days).

While most of my time is travelling to work in the suburbs, I have a trip planned to the Flinders Ranges next month and want to get to the Kimberly next year.

Tyres of interest that seem to be outside the norm ie. 265 60 options include:-

    Cooper AT3 LT 275/65 18 815 OD ( I think these are 2mm outside legal)
    BF Goodrich LT 265/65 18 802 OD
    Cooper Zeon LTZ P 285/65 18 800 OD

What modifications are required? Will they fit inside the spare wheel well? Road noise?

    Look forward to any advice.

Cooper AT3 LT 275/65 R18 OD - Not without modification

Both the below tyres will either need Rods or LLAMS:
BF Goodrich LT 265/65 R18 802 OD - Yes but it will need to be flat to fit in the spare tyre space!
Cooper Zeon LTZ P 285/60 R18 800 OD - Same as the BFG, yes any tyre that is more aggressive than the Wranglers will make more noise. These are noticeable but not annoying like a mud terrain.

Not that it helps much for 18s with the available options, but the Coopers rep I talked to at the 4WD show was emphatic about the advantages of LT over passenger tyres. Toughness, reduced flex etc...

Thanks for your responses so far.

Stuart we must have been talking to the same bloke at the show. He was really pushing the LTs without knowing much about the Landrover limits

Rich, could you elaborate on the Llaams and rods in respect to when and why the vehicle needs to be raised with the larger diameter tyres. I must admit I had never heard of the term Llaams but am aware of Gordons height sensor rods. Is it more around suspension travel off road causing the body to bottom out or for other reasons. Also you mention modifications, how serious are these?

Made an error in Zeon LTZ size should be 285/60/18s

    Regards

    Hi Peter,
LLAMS is an electronic module that fools the suspension CPU, read through the link below:

I'll need to find the extensive mods that a guy did in the US to fit 33" tyres.
I'll get back to you on this.

    Thanks Rich

Dont go to too much trouble, only investigating options and not likely to do anything too far outside the box.

    Best Regards

Yeah my guy made a fair point that 17" rims would just about pay for themselves with the increased options - some of the 17R Coopers were guaranteed for 90000 kms, cf only 60000 kms for the 18R tyres.
