It takes about 3 goes to get the oil back to clean once you start if not doing a flush. You can remove a hose and pump oil out, but just dropping the sump and topping up will eventually work. I ordered 20 ltrs from ZF, but think for your kms would get away with 10 ltrs.

As with Fatso I had mine properly flushed by the ZF agents in WA, Automac, cost me $1150 or thereabouts, I already had the metal sump.
The results were well worth it, transmission became as smooth as new an absolute pleasure to drive. I'll have it done every 50000K's now.

The idea behind the purge is to suck the oil out from the connection at the oil cooler and pump in the new oil at the same point thus replacing ALL the oil.
By emptying the sump and refilling it, all the old oil that is in the system is not replaced.

Well worth doing as a regular part of your maintenance

thanks for the advice - i thought it sounded pretty pricey. they did quote $80 a litre. i wonder if i could order the oil and parts myself and get them to do the labour - i dont think they would go for that - looks like i may be going back over the bridge to see Ward. would this be covered under extended warranty?

There is nothing stopping you from getting the oil, pan and filter directly from ZF. They're heaps cheaper than LR and a lot of shops (that will add markup on it).

Also don't discount going directly to auto transmission shops - these gearboxes are now very common - in a lot of Falcons, etc.

This is not a warranty item - so forget about getting reimbursed for the cost. LR only change the oil at 150,000km, IIRC.

There are ZF dealers in Sydney so I would be getting the work done there.

Ring ZF and ask them - I did exactly that a while back to find dealers in Canberra - of which there are none.

Ok so picked up car today for the other issues with it and one of the service advisors said that they couldnt guarantee that a trans flush would rectify the problem (vibration through gas peddle at 40 km/h) and that 7 out of 10 cases it works but no guarantee. then he said that if it doesnt work i would have to fork out another 6,000 for new transmission as it normally made the trans worse if the flush didnt work. so i could be up for nearly 8,000 bucks if i had to do both. is this accurate?
