D4 "oversize" tyres

I must be one of the unlucky ones. I have a set of AT3s on my D3. I've had three punctures in them so far. One of them was due to offroad work, one due to a tech screw on the bitumen and one from a *big* stone from a rough dirt road that is suitable for normal cars. This latest one has me in a quandary. The local tyre shop patched it (illegally as it has cut cords) and put it on as a spare. I'm presently hunting a set of two across Melbourne. New Years Eve is probably not the best time :oops2:

This sound like my road. I recently asked the council to make their September's emergency repairs reasonable for normal cars but the chief engineer drove it and said it was possible to get through in a normal car. The big rocks destroyed a truck tyre but my LT Yokos have survived unscathed to date.

So what is the largest diameter tyre that can be fitted which won't imobilise the vehicle if it drops to the bump stops?

the Largest legal wheel for a 2009-2013 D4 is a 20', and for the newer 2014/15 I think that you can go upto 21', but dont quote me...

A few sites say 265/65r18 is the biggest without fender modifications for rubbing etc. Gordon at GOE has great info on mods and which tyres fit.

Thanks Muskie, but I already have 18" rims. I'm trying to determine what is the overall maximum wheel/tyre diameter that can be fitted and will still turn if the vehicle drops to the bump stops. If the tyre is too big the vehicle will literally sit on the tyre and you'll be stranded.

I have had my D3 drop to the bump stops before but had the standard 255/60R18 tyres and managed to limp home, so I'm a little wary of how big we can go as we do travel to remote areas. We crossed the Simpson last year, planning Cape York this year.

I've since found a thread which Gordon has fitted Mickey Thompson ATZ 265/70R17 which are 802mm total diameter which didn't hit when on the bump stops on a D3. Also stated a slightly larger Super Swamper tyre of the same 265/70R18 size would not fit. Must be slight variations in manufacturers standards?

So from Gordon's experiences, it would seem the limits may be just over 800mm?

But then Graeme indicated his D4 drops about 50mm from access height to bump stops, whereas Gordon's RRS only drop 15mm.

A 285/60R18 tyre (799mm) is slightly smaller in diameter than the 265/70R17 mentioned above.

Currently looking at 285/60R18 tyres and trying to confirm if anyone has had issues with fitting these size tyres and the bump stops.

I have been down to LLAMS -20, super low setting and access height....no rubbing, but if anything other than a good smooth road, you would not be going well as they car fuel tank is almost touching the road.

Emergency airup kit from GOE is the way to go.
