So what is the best way to maximise tyre life?? How many of you actually rotate with the spare?
I have just had a wheel alignment done on my D4 due to excessive wear on the front outside edges.

I include the spare in my rotation. Spare to front left, front left to rear right, rear right to front right, front right to rear left, rear left to spare.
I like to replace all my tyres at once, that way no matter what I buy the will all be the same and no issues if I need to use the spare.

My D4 definately wears the fronts first and pretty evenly too. I was going to get another wheel but I've had trouble finding a second hand one. I was thinking about getting a spare tyre and doing a swap on one rim. That way I get to use the spare wheel and the 6th tyre.

I get on pretty well with my local tyre shop....I'm sure they won't mind.

X2 for us on our D4 and our previous D2, although the last couple have been at 10,000ks, as we have done a lot of Ks in the last 11mths.

Has worked well for the last 5 years.

I'm getting 60,000K out of a set of General Grabbers on my D3 and I find that as long as wheel alignment is set up correctly there is not enough difference in wear patterns between front and rear to justify rotating tyres.

Geez, you think LR sevice is bad....?

I'll start by saying it should be no comparision...bad service is bad service...but.....

My wife's Merc went in for it's first service last week. The clowns didn't even inspect the wheels and tyres....checking wheel alignment, balance and condition of wheels and tyres is pretty much a fundemantal.....isn't it?

Oh, they were supposed to, they just didn't. The egg on the side-wall of one tyre and the scrubbing on the other would normally be noticed don't you think?
Yes my wife likes potholes..... She hit one a few days before but being a low profile tyre, if you are on top of it, you can't see the egg. I noticed it and then the penny dropped as the MB service had been in-between. Then I noticed the scrubbing on the tyre too. The car has only done 13K.

I took them to task and got a very wishy, washy defensive response.....

A good arse kicking later and things are better....but WTF?

Apart from the fact that they didn't actually look at the wheels, they recon they only check wheel alignment if there are obvious signs of wear or the customer reports otherwise......I'm sure I get a shiny photo of my D4 with an alignment and brake check recorded as standard, every time it gets serviced.

    Am I missing something?
