Brake drum?

Might be a disc warped/cracked/broken or pad falling apart.

Jack up and pull wheel off and look at the disc/pad and see if its obviously out of place.

replacing a pad can be done easily enough - if you are not too far away from a dealer or someone who has one and tools to do so. Where are you exactly?

One of the guys recently posted that when he did the reset procedure by locking and unlocking the car four times it reset the park brake. Might be worth a shot to get you out of gaol.

If the park brake is still binding, you can use the manual release cable (under the cup holders) to release it. If you do that, don't use the park brake again until you get it seen to.

If that's all the problem is, you shouldn't have any problem going off-road. But if something is still binding the wheel I'd be cautious - it can get very hot!

Same thing happened to me and I took it to a dealer. The mechanism has failed and they are going to fix it under warranty but they said just don't use the park break until fixed. They said sometimes it is just needing a clean out. If you use it, it could jam and then you would have to do the release thingy as mentioned. I went to Fraser Island for ten days with the park break not working. Just don't park on any steep hills.

I always ask the dealer to clean mine out at every service as a precaution after having to use the emergency release in the past... they always insist on charging me but I remind them that it really shouldn't fail due to offroad use considering what the vehicle is intended for and how it is marketed!

The charge is then kindly removed

I did the whole of the Simpson Desert in my D3 without the Park Brake after the brake light started to flash. No problem at all.I'm pretty sure this was due to dust.. Once after a service there was binding which manifested itself as vibration from back of car. Was easy to find the problem cause the brakes gave off a smell and one was much hotter than the other. Just touching the wheel indicated which one was faulty.
Touch wood I haven't had any probs with the park brake in my my D4.
Be interesting to do a poll of D4 park brake to see if they are still a problem.

Does anyone know how to (have pictures of) how to clean out the park brake?

Mine failed after a week on dirt/bulldust. Was replaced under warranty but now out of warranty would like to try and prevent failures, would be good if you can just stick a hose in it after long dirt trips ( this really shouldnt be necessary on a 4wd vehicle, some stuff Land Rover enginners brilliantly for off road, other stuff, park brake, jack, spare wheel hoist, tow hitch, seem to be after thoughts) but not sure if this possible and where to put it if it is.

Just take the wheel off , pull out the little orange plastic plug (don't loose it!) hose or compressed air and blow or wash out.. Should help..

Be interesting to hear from D4 owners regarding Park Brake failures.

As for spare wheel hoist, I never retract unless wheel is on it. Best to tie it up with cable tie or something. New style D4 hitch no trouble for me.
