    D4 failing height sensor already

Not quite 100K kms and a height sensor has started to give false readings, with the left rear corner sometimes getting quite low. It seems to have a bad spot around access height although the latest problem occurred at normal height which took some fiddling to coax it to raise. Its just out of warranty too!

I think we are having a similar problem Graeme, with the front of the car sitting lower than the rear, it's quite noticeable on a flat surface, even with the camper on, in conjunction with this we have been getting suspension faults as well, even after the new compressor was fitted after the old one failed, even at on road height and not offroad, no Llams fitted.

Hopefully your vehicle gets sorted soon.

With the Llams module replaced by the loop-back plug to get it out of the equation, Faultmate shows the sensor virtually unchanged as the corner drops, with the diagonally opposite front corner values changing to reflect that corner rising. There was an articulation plausibility fault about a week ago dropping the car to the bump-stops a few times that were overcome by restarting (even without stoppng!), which also points to a sensor going haywire. No specific sensor fault has been recorded so the system thinks its getting real values, but perhaps before long the sensor will fail totally then be ignored. I should be able to disconnect the sensor to force a fault if it keeps sending false values.

Edit: Cost for a new one is less than my cost of fuel to get to the nearest dealer! Learnt that left and right rear use the same sensor and left and right front use another same sensor so ordered a spare front at the same time.

The height sensor problems didn't re-occur until today on the way to town when the "50 kph" msg kept coming back shortly after each of the 4 or 5 engine restarts whilst travelling to prevent the vehicle from lowering to the bump-stops each time. A quick check with Faultmate showed the same articulation plausibility fault as previously. As it happily raised with Llams set to +30, armed with pliers the main suspension 20A fuse was pulled as the vehicle lowered to normal height with Llams set off but before the left rear corner sank too far. Back home a new sensor was fitted and now the vehicle stands at an even height all round.

Graeme, are the height sensors the same for each corner....same part ?

The rear ones are 1 part and the front another. I have one of each as spares.

Time to purchase one each then.

That means I have a GOE emergency air up, brake switch, and then these two suckers...hope that's about it.

I was told by Barbagallo that all four height sensors were different but it is good to know that there are only two. I might get them as spares also. You probably also need spare ABS wheel sensors! I think there are two types for these as well. There were none in Aus when I got my spares before my Cape York trip last September and they took a couple of months to arrive. They are not cheap either.

The spare parts person at ULR looked-up my D4's sensor part numbers to advise of the 2 different sensors. They were around $100 each.

I don't see the need to have a spare wheel speed sensor.

The ABS sensor is recommended by GOE and I don't mind having a spare for remote travel. Doesn't fail very often but if it does I expect that it affects a lot of systems. It is an easy part to chuck in the rear side compartment ready to use in an emergency.

Graeme, does the height sensor come with the rod attached? Perhaps the sensor is the same but the rods are different for all four corners.
